Shinhotaka most secluded of the five onsen areas of Okuhida Onsengo onsen area. This onsen is famous for its dynamic outdoor baths, and its closeness to nature. We want to show you Shinzanso this time. This place is built next to Kamatagawa with 3 different levels of outdoor baths, with the lowest one being the mixed bath. Because of the river right by it in the summer some guests go straight into the river apparently. We recommend it because you can enjoy every season here.

Shinhotaka is part of the Okuhida Onsengo’s 5 onsen groups.

Because of its proximity to the ropeway and its location deep in the mountains it is loved by many climbers as well as tourists to this area.

The Shinzanso inn is built in this idyllic Shinhotaka’s Kamata riverside area, allowing guests to be immersed deeply in this abundant nature.

To get to Shinzanso you first park your car then cross the suspension bridge called Kajikabashi Bridge. The view of the river and the mountains from here are spectacular.

The bath right next to Kamatagawa River is an outdoor bath.

Although it is a mixed bath, women can feel at ease bathing here because you can wear a swimsuit or even bath wear.

The spring brings Kamatagawa to a roar with the thawing of the snow, while in summer many guests just jump into the river, in autumn you can watch the fall leaves change, and finally in winter you can bathe while watching the snow fall, making this a bath you can enjoy year round. Come alone, with family or even with friends.

The two baths above are separated into men and women’s baths.

Bathe in a tub that uses nature to its advantage

Try bathing in the outdoor bath.

The tub uses nature with its large boulders surrounding the tub and as mineral encrustations left by hot springs float in the water, each bath is large but the middle is the smaller of the 3. Even still it is a spacious 27sqm in area.

The source of the water is the same for all three but each feels different in temperature. All are around the optimal 40 degrees Celsius making them easy to bathe in.

There is also a women only bath

Of course to fully appreciate the beauty of the wilderness that line the Kamatagawa river it’s best to bathe in all three baths, but for those who can’t bathe in a mixed bath even with a bathing suit there is a women only bath.

Although not large it also uses rocks to line the bath and the water is nice and soft.

In closing

Although there are is a plethora of outdoor baths around the country there are very few which are built this close to a river. You will have to complaints bathing here while taking in the majestic natural view.
