Portland Mayor’s Mansion
Portland Mayor’s Mansion, originally the H. Russell House, appears from the outside to be a school or other official building. It is so formal. But, take one step inside and you will find much more. Restoration of the mansion maintained the atmosphere of historical importance but the host makes this a welcoming and comfortable piece of history.
Located in southeast Portland and found on the National Register of Historic Places, the Colonial Revival Architecture overlooks historic Laurelhurst Park. The house is absolutely gorgeous and filled with Asian art. You can enjoy relaxing on the front porch in the late afternoon or evening before heading out for evening plans.
The owner is a natural host. He is a great conversationalist and extremely knowledgeable about Portland and the surrounding area. He knows every detail about the history of the mansion as well. He freely provides historical information about the area as well as recommendations for a day of exploring the off-the-beaten-path areas of Portland, Oregon.
Rooms with historic significance
History is a part of each of four guest rooms. Each room is named for a significant person in area history. A placard posted in each room includes historical details about the namesake and their contributions to history. Room amenities include the softest sheets you would have ever feel and very comfortable beds. Sleeping is easy in the quiet, relaxed, and comfortable rooms. The bathrooms are spacious and thoughtfully organized with soft, plush towels and lightly scented shampoo and lotion. Smoking and pets are not permitted on the property. It is also important to note that children under 10 years of age are not allowed as guests.
Breakfast frequently features Dick’s famous French toast
Breakfast is served every morning at 8:30 AM and includes a variety of tasty options including fresh fruit. Dick is famous for his delectable French toast! He has won a couple of local awards for this scrumptious entree. It practically melts in your mouth without syrup. Breakfast is served in the spacious dining room on the main floor.
Depending on occupancy, you can have the formal table to yourself or be joined by other guests. There is a side room with chairs if you want more solitude while you enjoy your breakfast. While private room service is not available, you will definitely be well fueled for the day with Dick’s breakfast.
The International Testing Rose Garden is a treat in any season
The Mayor’s Mansion is located in southeast Portland near bus routes. A short bus ride links with the Max light rail transit, which will get you close to the gardens, or stay with the bus system for an informal scenic tour of Portland. Either way, getting around Portland without a car is easy to do. The Rose Garden is located in Washington Park in the northwest hills. While the roses are in best bloom in the summer, filling the air with luscious scents, the grounds are open year round for a tranquil outing.
