To quote Hannah Montana: “Everybody makes mistakes, everybody has those days”. But in terms of travelling, you simply can’t afford to make some mistakes. Little mistakes, like forgetting to pack toiletries or forgetting that extra towel, are okay, but imagine forgetting to change your money and having no ATM card with you! There are some mistakes that will make life on the road pretty difficult, and that’s why we’ve prepared a list of the travel mistakes you definitely do not want to make, because, we care!

1. Not reading up on the destination’s current affairs

If you don’t keep abreast of what’s going on in the world, don’t be surprised if you wake up one morning to a protest happening right at the door of your hotel! Check travel advisories, and follow relevant news.

2. Not packing clothes that are culturally appropriate

In places that aren’t very liberal on what you wear, such as the Middle East and some Asian countries, you should pack appropriate clothes, usually those that cover up much of the body (especially for females). It’s best to do your research on the cultural norms of your destination prior to your travels, unless you want to get embarrassed by the remarks of the locals, or worse!

3. Not changing enough money

Sure, there will be money changers at your destination but … the rates, though?! Be rate-aware and if you will get a worse deal when at your destination, be savvy when changing money pre-trip.

4. Not packing some clothes in your carry-on

Trust us, it is HIGHLY POSSIBLE for your checked luggage to be lost. Of course, you can always buy things there, but do you want the hassle?

5. Not packing clothes that are suitable for the weather conditions

Three words: DO. YOUR. RESEARCH.

6. Not booking accommodation in advance

We mean, YOLO, right? But seriously, would you want to sleep at the airport / bus station / park for your first night?

7. Overpacking

Unless you want to end up throwing some stuff away at the airport because you’ve exceeded your baggage limit, don’t.

8. Not checking your bill plans

While you’re happily using your data and internet and all that kind of stuff, future you back home is crying at the huge bill that just arrived because past you failed to check your bill plans before flying.

9. Finding out your passport has expired

What’s worse than realising your passport has expired before you take a trip? Finding out that it expired just days before you!. Do check your passport for the expiry date prior to booking, and also make sure that it will be valid for the necessary length of time after your trip, as required by many countries.

Double and triple check before you fly

Nothing is worse than having your whole trip ruined before it even starts just because of these little mistakes we can all make. It’s best to do a checklist while you’re doing your travel planning, and refer to the checklist again before you fly away! Happy travelling!
