The city of Kolkata which is popularly known as the ‘City of Joy’ has its rich cultural charm with faded remnants of British Rule. The city was the epicenter of the Industrial Revolution in India and witnessed many independent movements in British-ruled India. Kolkata is the birthplace of many poetic, cultural, artistic, and liberal movements in India during the 19th and early 20th Century. Despite being futuristic in their endeavor to evolve as a modern metropolis, you can still feel the richness of their culture through nascent millennial residences and royal houses or ‘Rajbaris’ that have been turned into heritage hotels. To witness the rich culture and grandeur of old Bengal, you must pay a visit to Kolkata and take day trips to the cultural places. Let’s have a look at the heritage hotels in Kolkata, India, that should be on your bucket list.
We handpicked these listings carefully, considering (wherever possible) the property's historical and cultural significance, recent guest reviews, location, accommodation type, prices, availability of dates, decor, and amenities. The image galleries get refreshed with the latest updates regularly. They were last updated on October 03, 2024.

The Oberoi Grand is located just next to the popular New Market. If you want to sample local food, you can check out Nizam's, which serves delicious kebabs and kathi rolls. You may also head to the nearby KC Das on Central Avenue, just a seven-minute drive away, and try out the delicious Rasagollas. Within walking distance is the Indian Museum, which is the largest museum in India.

Don't miss out on the sensory extravaganza, i.e. New Market, sitting just behind this hotel. Garments, shoes, accessories, cosmetics, bags, electronics - this market has it all. Asian Arts Jewellery is my favorite stop to pick up silver nose pins and earrings at an economic rate. In an adjacent lane, you will find Nahoum and Sons - one of the oldest bakeries in the city. Don't forget to taste their lemon tarts and Madeira cakes. If you are visiting in December, do stand in the queue for their famous plum cake.
Every time I am in New Market, I make it a point to grab a mutton role at Nizam's Restaurant as well. A less popular but equally mouthwatering option is UP & Bihar Restaurant, which serves succulent beef rolls at 40 INR and delicious beef biryani just at 90 INR!

I have never stayed at The Astor Hotel, but I have lost count of the number of times I have been in the area. For a history buff like me, it is a real treat because historical landmarks such as the David Hare Mausoleum, Victoria Memorial, Old Guin House, Netaji Bhawan, Gwalior Monument, Fort William South Gate, Sister Nivedita's House, Bishop's House, Shaheed Minar, and Indian Museum are nearby. Make sure you end your day by visiting Bow Barracks - Kolkata's quaint neighborhood that is dotted with red-brick houses and is full of Anglo-Indian charm. I visit when it's Christmastime and the place is lit up with fairy lights, people are making merry, and children are enjoying a ride on the merry-go-round. You would have to be here to know that it is as good as the carnival in Park Street.

Although you will be lulled to a peaceful slumber, this hotel on Sudder Street will open up more options for you. You will be 1.6 kilometers (about a mile) from the 'most happening place' in the city - Park Street (Mother Teresa Sarani). The street is dotted by 'n' number of cafes, book stores, curio stores, bars, multi-cuisine restaurants, traditional restaurants, so on and so forth. Treat yourself to mouth-watering devilled crabs, fish Wellington or bhetki meunière (barramundi fillets slathered in lemon-butter sauce) at one of the oldest and heritage restaurants - Mocambo Restaurant and Bar. If you are a bookworm, then you must drop by Oxford Book Store. Sift through the large collection, pick your favorite, and take a seat at the mini cafe within the book store. Tip from Trip101 local expert
If you are staying at this heritage hotel that treats its guests like royalty and is every bit grand and spectacular, chances are that you will not want to go outside and decide to stay in. If you, however, plan a day of sightseeing around the property, I will recommend a visit to Nizam's. The restaurant is as old as time and is famous for its delicious kathi rolls. You will also find the best haleem here. Some of my personal favorites are the double mutton kathi roll and tikka biryani along with zafrani firni to end it on a sweet note.

The property features a children’s playground, an indoor and an outdoor pool, Mantra Spa, library, a private dining room, and other facilities that let you have a feel of the rich heritage of Bengal.
Tip from Trip101 local expert
Rajbari Bawali is a little beyond the city limits. If you travel directly from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, it would take you about two hours to reach this heritage hotel. The property arranges for paid airport transfer, so if you are new to the city, this is the best option for you. Alternatively, there are private taxi services too. It is, however, advisable to furnish all details to the hotel (such as your choice of food) beforehand. In case you are a vegan, a little heads-up will prepare the hotel to stir up a delicious Bengali fare suitable to your palate! Among all the other heritage hotels that will offer their own share of history, this is where you will witness the grand 'zamindari' (landlords) culture and spectacular architecture of Bengal.
