Amsterdam is known for a lot of things, most prominent being the city’s artsy pedigree, one that’s evident from the several galleries and museums. Sites like the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum are enough evidence of Amsterdam’s love for art, with a connection to famous personalities like Rembrandt and Vermeer. If you’re traveling on a budget, you can tour the city on two wheels; the majority of people in Amsterdam use bicycles, a great way to experience the city’s culture. There are also dozens of hostels in the city, pocket-friendly places to stay that open their doors to travelers throughout the year. Below, we’ve put together a list of hostels with private rooms in Amsterdam, offering a hotel-like experience. Scroll down to learn more.

They call themselves a designer hostel and, though this is a bold claim, Generator Amsterdam certainly lives up to the hype. The interior space is elegantly decorated, with a clever use of color that complements the bright light streaming in via the massive windows. The artwork on the walls can be subtle in some rooms and loud in others, appealing to different personalities. There are dormitories, as you would expect from a hostel, but there are also private rooms which they call premium rooms. However, the icing is the two-bedroom apartment, for visitors who are looking for a homely experience. Generator Amsterdam is nestled in Oosterpark within an old zoological building.
