Tip from tour guide
Only 10 minutes away from Hotel Verdi by car, Cattedrale di Pisa is a must-visit attraction in Pisa. The cathedral was built in the late 11th century as a symbol of Pisa's power over Muslims and a token of thanks for the spoils brought from various conquests. Unfortunately, in 1595, the temple was largely destroyed by a fire. The ceiling, doors, and many interior decorations were then lost indefinitely.
Here you can find Giovanni Pisano's beautiful desk with scenes from the New Testament, allegories of virtues and liberal arts, lions, and many other details. You will also see the first naked woman in European art, the allegory of Moderation. In the cathedral's Baroque chapel rest the remains of the patron saint of Pisa, St. Pisa.
Good news! Entrance to the cathedral is free, but you have to come to get a ticket before an hour of entry at the counter at the Square of Miracles.

The first thing we think about Pisa is the Leaning Tower, so definitely don't miss it when this hotel is so near. The structure's architects didn't realize that its shallow and heavy foundation would not work well with the unstable subsoil in Pisa, which comes from the Greek word for “marshy land." The tower only started to sink on one side as the second story was built, but it was already too late to stop.

Visit Camposanto, a wonderful cemetery less than 10 minutes away from this hotel by car. "Campo Santo" means the sacred field, and it's a cemetery for the tombs of the sacred land that the Pisans carried during the Second Crusade. It's a unique place and is known especially for its cycles of frescoes, which were unfortunately damaged during World War II. However, I highly recommend visiting it for its special atmosphere. Built as a rectangular box with Gothic windows, the building showcases a play of light and shadow. The frescoes were painted by Spinello Aretino, Taddeo Gaddi, Piero di Puccio, Andrea di Bonaiuto, Buffalmacco, and Benozzo Gozzoli. Pay attention to scenes from The Triumph of Death and the Last Judgment. The cemetery contains a collection of 84 Roman sarcophagi and funerary monuments carved by sculptors such as Lorenzo Bartolini, Giovanni Duprè, Bartolomeo Ammannati, and Stefano Ricci. While exploring Camposanto, check out the memorial dedicated to mathematician, astronomer, and physicist, Ottaviano Fabrizio Mossotti, in 1867 by Giovanni Duprè (1817-1882). The sensual and deep-in-thought woman symbolizes Urania, the muse of astronomy and geometry.

Want to check out one of the most mysterious places in Pisa? Just take a six-minute drive to Santo Sepolcro. It has a curious octagonal shape with a pyramidal roof. The church served as the building of the Knights Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem in the 12th century, but some see the Templar's influence in it. Pisa, the feared Maritime Republic at the time, wanted to have a building similar to the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
On the bell tower, there is a marble plaque with the name of the mysterious architect, Diotisalvi, the one who designed the octagonal Baptistery as well. The decorations above the entrance are in the medieval style. The interior is stunning and displays some curiosities. For example, the tomb of Marie Mancini Colonna, one of the lovers of Louis XIV, the Sun King who died in Pisa after an adventurous and long life, can be found here. Another curiosity is the 12th-century well. According to a legend, it was used by St. Ubaldesca to turn water into wine.

Want to discover a hidden treasure in Pisa? Then, take an 11-minute drive from this hotel to San Piero a Grado. According to a legend, San Peter arrived in this location in 44 AD and erected the first altar. The ancient harbor of Pisa was located nearby. Pisa was an important city back then.
The present church dates back to the 11th century but it was built on the older ones. Inside, you can see the remains of previous buildings brought back to life during the excavations. The atmosphere inside the church is amazing! The most astonishing thing is the cycle of frescoes from the 14th century painted by Deodato Orlandi, showing the episodes of the life of San Peter. On some walls, even the older frescoes from the 11th century can be seen! Outside, the ceramic Islamic decorations are still visible. The originals are in the Museum of San Matteo in Pisa.
The church is open from 8 am to 7 pm and allows free entry.

Tip from tour guide
Make some time to explore Piazza dei Miracoli during your stay. While it's known for the Leaning Tower of Pisa, there are many other things to see there. Here's a little guide to the attractions you can find:
- Cattedrale di Pisa: The cathedral dates back to 1063 and is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption. The city of Pisa became a maritime power in the 11th century and the cathedral was built with the spoils brought back from Palermo. Hence, it presents a mixture of styles: Moresque, Lombard Romanesque, and local.
Take a good look at its façade, the marble cover, and the central doors of John Bologna’s workshop, as well as the side door of Bonanno Pisano. Its details are really surprising! The elegant and harmonious interior houses the remains of the patron saint of Pisa, Saint Rainier, the spectacular pulpit of Giovanni Pisano, and the mosaic of Cimabue in the apse.
- Battistero di San Giovanni: Just opposite the cathedral, there is a circular building whose base showcases a Romanesque and Gothic style. Look at the decorations below the entrance; you can see scenes from the life of Saint-Jean Baptiste. The baptistery also has exceptional acoustics. In fact, when you visit it, do not be surprised by songs that illustrate this phenomenon. Baptistries were used to baptize; in the center of this one, you can see the octagonal baptismal basin. Just like in the cathedral, there is another pulpit here made by Giovanni’s father, Nicola Pisano.
