The town of Captain Hiram Cox
For its miles-long beaches, Cox’s Bazar is often considered the Cancun of the east. The town is named after Captain Hiram Cox, a late officer of the British East India Company. Captain Hiram Cox was the Superintendent of Palongkee, in the era of Warren Hastings, the former Governor of Bengal. He was dedicated to the rehabilitation of Arakanese refugees in this area. Unfortunately, he died in the year 1799 before his work was done. Later, a market was established in his honor and named Cox’s Bazar (Market of Cox). It is one of the names which has remained unchanged from the colonial era.
The town is also known as Panowa, which signifies a yellow flower. Apart from being an important touristic city, the town is also a fishing port and the district headquarters of southeastern Bangladesh. It is also known for its proximity to the border of Myanmar or Burma.
