Maidens bathed Mumtaz Mahal's body with cold camphor and rose water then wrapped it in five pieces of cloth. She was carried to the burial site by four close relatives and temporarily buried in the garden on the banks of the Tapti River. Her body was oriented north to south with her face facing Mecca to the west.
Shah Jahan mourned for 40 days and only dressed in white clothes. His hair turned white, and he visited the grave at night and cried until dawn. He hardly ate and didn't listen to music.
