This property is only about a five-minute drive from The Baptistery of St. John. The Baptistery has mosaics inside with the Last Judgment, the stories from Genesis, the Gospels about Joseph being betrayed by his brothers, and of course, about St. John the Baptist. There's also a shocking message hidden in the frame of the south door of the Baptistery. When we stand in front of it, on our left we see Adam with animals on him that symbolize fertility and salvation, along with beneficial plants such as olive trees, ears of wheat, and lilies. On the right, we see Eve, who always pays for the Original Sin. She is presented with animals and plants associated with witchcraft, such as an owl, poppies, sorghum, viburnum, and henbane. The latter has narcotic and poisonous properties; Hamlet’s father was killed with this plant!
Additionally, you can find holly, whose berries are toxic to humans, and also see the spindle and the rock, which are generally associated with witches. In short, Eve is shown to be associated with the devil, witchcraft, and misfortune. The frame was sculpted by Vittorio Ghiberti according to the design of Father Lorenzo in the years 1453-66. When you think that 50 years later many witches will start burning in Italy, this sends a chilling message.

During your stay at this hotel, don't forget to visit the Basilica of Santa Croce, only a two-minute walk away. Check out the tomb of Michelangelo in the church. In front of the sarcophagus, we see three seated women, the allegories of Sculpture (in the center), Painting (to the left), and Architecture (to the right). Above is the bust of Michelangelo looking at his funeral mask. On the sides, you can see the coat of arms of the Buonarroti family and the emblem of the Academy of Design founded in Florence in 1563. There are three circles with three branches of trees: oak, laurel, and olive.
The tomb is decorated in fresco with the Pietà in the center. The one we see today to the right of the main entrance was designed by Giorgio Vasari with the help of other sculptors, including Valerio Cioli and Giovanni Bandini. The fresco was executed by Giovanni Battista Naldini.
No one seems to have taken into account the intentions of the deceased, who desired for himself a simple tomb in Rome with the sculpture of the Pietà!

Want to discover less-known places in Florence? Take a short five-minute drive to the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in the Oltrarno district. This church is famous as the location of Brancacci Chapel, which houses outstanding Renaissance frescoes by Masaccio and Masolino da Panicale, later finished by Filippino Lippi.
You have to pay to visit this chapel, but you can enter the church freely in the morning or in the afternoon to admire amazing ceiling decorations. Especially the Corsini Chapel is a real Baroque pearl in Florence.
