Tip from tour guide
Just 4.6 kilometers (2.86 miles) away, you'll find Salineras de Maras, one of my favorite places in Cusco. Luckily, the last time I went there was with my family, which was truly memorable. The salt mine has 3,000 small wells with an approximate area of about 5 square meters (53.82 square feet) each. In times of drought, these wells are filled with salt water that comes from a natural spring located above them. When the water evaporates, the salt crystallizes. When the salt reaches about 10 centimeters (3.94 inches) above the floor, it is removed and bagged in cloth sacks to be sent to the markets of the region. Today, that salt is being iodized by state regulations. This salt, in addition to sodium chloride, has other minerals, such as calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, and copper.
