Unassuming entrance makes no lunges for your pocketbook

entrance

The hotel is located on a small, but easy to find, street that runs along a pleasant canal. There’s parking available for 500 JPY (5 USD) on the basement level, and that’s just the beginning! The hotel features two restaurants, and there is also a communal bathing area on the top floor that commands views of the surrounding city. Kochi’s streetcar system has a stop just a couple of minutes’ walk away, and there are dozens, if not hundreds, of shops, restaurants, and nightlife spots within a ten to fifteen minute walk.

Should you spring the extra 500 JPY (5 USD) or so, you will find the breakfast selection to be north of adequate. It’s a hot breakfast buffet, with various breads and cold items available as well. And it’s a steal when you commit to it at time of reservation, but is still only a few bucks more if you buy it on the spot.

Room appointments are a cut above the standard "business hotel"

room interior

Though not excessively spacious, the room will not require body contortions to navigate. The bed is not just ample, but also amply outfitted, with comfortable sheets, pillow, and comforter. With not many tall buildings in the immediate vicinity, you are likely to have lots of natural light.

One particularly noteworthy treat is a window that slides wide open! Most hotels in Japan have locks in place that prevent the windows from being opened much more than a few fingers’ width. Television, in-room refrigerator, slippers, dimming lights, alarm clock, and WiFi are all at your disposal.

The bathroom size is inversely proportionate to your room rate

bathroom

With room rates, including breakfast, around 6,000 JPY (55 USD), it would be unfair of you to expect a massive bathroom. That said, this bathroom will do just fine. The eco-friendly soap and shampoo dispensers are filled with quality bathing products that belie the wallet-friendly room pricing. The hot water is plentiful, and the towels are soft.

Room with a view

view

The mere fact that a room has a view does not guarantee that the view will be a heartstopping gaze over an expanse of immense beauty. It is a typical midsize Japanese city, after all. There’s a good chance that you’ll see the mountains which surround Kochi, and some of the urban features that lie between them and you. Hopefully you’ll chance upon a better-weather day than when this was taken.

Calibrate yourself to "value" and you will be nothing but pleased

Low prices, acceptably sized rooms, a decent location, and better-than-average appointments make the South Breeze Hotel a good choice for a night or two in Kochi. With the money you save here, go out and enjoy the amazing food that the city has on offer!
