When a scorching sun makes the temperature in the “Venice of the East” soar, one of the best places to beat the heat is the majestic gardens of Saheliyon Ki Bari in Udaipur. This beautiful attraction is located in Udaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan and brims with lush plant life and stunning architectural features. A garden oasis on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake, Saheliyon Ki Bari translates to “Garden of the Maidens" and was built by Maharana Sangram Singh II in 1734 as a gift from the king to his queen and her 48 ladies as a place of respite. The garden remains a pleasurable attraction with a peaceful atmosphere today and is renowned for its beautiful architectural elements as well as its picturesque pools and scenic flora. Enjoy a peaceful stroll along the fragrant lanes and verdant lawns as you admire features like the marble elephant statues, elegant rain fountains, delicately carved pavilions, ornate kiosks, and more. There is also a fantastic museum on-site which highlights collections from royal households. Read the guide to Saheliyon Ki Bari, for helpful tips, and travel and ticket information!

Architectural elements

From the flowers to the fountains, Saheliyon Ki Bari combines the best of natural and man-made marvels. In addition to beds of gorgeous blooms and sprawling lawns, Saheliyon Ki Bari is filled with breathtaking architectural features that delight the eye. Marble statues of elephants stand guard over the quiet pools and local birds splash in the spray of elegant fountains. Saheliyon Ki Bari is particularly renowned for the white marble pavilions that mesmerize with their ornate carvings, like the pavilion of rain fountains created by Maharana Bhopal Singh in 1889. With its delicate cascade of water droplets, the fountains evoke the image of the maidens of the past dancing in the rain. Elaborate fountains can be found all across the park, creating fantastic photograph opportunities. Some of the most beautiful examples are on display in the garden’s four tranquil water pools and at the main reservoir. Here, black and white ornately-carved kiosks are crowned by sculpted figurines of birds that spurt water from their beaks. All the fountains here were imported from England, making Saheliyon Ki Bari a unique blend of gardening styles. The lotus-shaped pools are another celebrated feature of Saheliyon Ki Bari, and nature lovers will adore watching the birds that come to take a dip between the lotus flowers and the fountains here.

Museum

Another highlight of Saheliyon Ki Bari is the small, on-site museum. This fantastic establishment exhibits a stunning collection from royal households, including photographs, artefacts, and artworks. As you meander through the exhibits, you can peruse everything from antique art ancient masterpieces to stuffed cobras and other animals.

When to visit

The gardens are beautiful to visit year-round, and it can take a couple of hours to meander through them. However, the heat of summer can feel very extreme. If you visit in summer, make sure you bring plenty of water to stay hydrated or try to visit the garden in the early morning to avoid the highest temperature peak. From September to March, the weather is milder and guests can take their time to enjoy the beauty of the gardens. This time frame is also when many festivals and celebrations occur in Udaipur.

Proper footwear

Due to the number of fountains, the pathways can become a little slick from the water spray. Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes that have a good tread so you don’t slip.

Food and drink

Food and drink are allowed in the park, and it is especially encouraged that you have drinking water with you. As a reminder though, Saheliyon Ki Bari is a heritage attraction so please be mindful about picking up after yourself and not leaving trash behind.

Photography

Photography is allowed in the garden, and with so many splendid flowers and features, make sure you don’t forget to bring your camera with you when you visit.
