Batu is a small city , yet it is full of attractions. Situated at 1,200 meters above the sea level, this Indonesian hill city in East Java has been a destination for both local and international tourists since 1930.
Since 1930? Really? Well, popular theme parks in Batu like East Java Park, Batu Night Spectacular or Transport Museum were founded and open to public only recently in the 21st century. So, what about attractions that have long been established?
Since a long time ago, Batu has been known for its park named Selecta. Built during the 1930s by a Dutch in the colonial era, this park used to be a recreational area for the Dutch but it has since been opened to visitors from 1950s. Today, Selecta is a popular attraction for both domestic and international tourists. If the park has been able to survive for more than 80 years, then there must be something about Selecta that is so valued by its visitors.

While paradise is only an illusionary idea, the beauty of the garden in Selecta, combined with the typical fine and cool mountain weather and the background view of big tropical forest will take you to a real paradise.

Here you will see various different types of colourful flower that originated from Indonesia and other places in Asia. The most common flowers are Mopheads, Indian shoot and Chrysanthemum. Forget the hustling and bustling of a big city. Take a brisk walk in the garden and relax your body, mind and soul here. Wait, there is something more you need to know! You may take photos as you like, but it is not allowed to pick any flowers (if each person brings a flower home, then you can imagine there will be no more flowers left, ha ha!).
Next to the flower garden is a swimming pool that has been there since 1950. The pool is regularly maintained, and its water flow directly from the mountain spring. No wonder its water is crystal clear and clean. You can also take your children to swim here, as they have a separate shallow swimming pool for children.

How to get there
Some travel agencies include Selecta in the tour package but it is easily accessible by car too! As Batu is a small city, everywhere is in close proximity. For your information, Selecta is located at the highest part of the hill city. Therefore, it can easily be reached from everywhere in Batu. You just need to go to any major roads and head up the hill. You will see signboards almost everywhere that will take you to Selecta.
A good deal
Entrance ticket is very cheap. With only 15,000 IDR (1.20 USD) on weekdays and 20,000 IDR (1.60 USD) on weekends, you can indulge in this paradise. What a good deal!
