Kahe Point Beach Park, more commonly known as Electric Beach, is located on the West Side of Oahu and is a famous beach for snorkeling and scuba diving. The small beach leads you to an area abundant with wildlife, where you get to swim with beautiful tropical fish, as well as turtles if you are lucky.

Why is it called electric beach?

Most people would be questioning why a spot famous for beautiful wildlife is called Electric Beach. Well, it is because the beach is located right by a power plant, which creates warm water attracting a variety of wildlife to this location. If you drive to this location, you will see tall chimneys from the distance. At first, it is hard to believe that right by this man-made power plant, there is ample wildlife, but many sea creatures enjoy warm environments just like we do, so this location attracts many colorful tropical fish, which makes this an ideal location for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Get ready to dive!

The beach area of Electric Beach is rather small compared to many other white sand beaches around Oahu. Many people who come to this beach come dressed in diving gear, rather than bikinis, in a group to go diving together. Of course, there are families with kids enjoying the beach, playing by the waves, but this beach mainly attracts those who enjoy diving to see the colorful Hawaiian marine creatures.

On a sunny weekend, you will see many scuba divers in full gear in groups going into the ocean. Along with scuba divers, you might see men spearfishing while snorkeling, and tourists as well as locals snorkeling as well.

Perfect clear water for snorkeling

Unfortunately, not everyone has a license to scuba dive, but even tourists can enjoy Electric Beach by going snorkeling at this beautiful location. On a sunny day, you will be able to see deep underwater, to view many of these colorful, tropical fish at Electric Beach. If you happen to enjoy going underwater closer to the fish, that certainly is fun, but even by just floating at the surface of the ocean, you can see a lot of colorful fish here. If you are lucky, you might run into turtles at this location as well. This is not a place where surfers and bodyboarders will be catching waves, so you do not need to worry about getting in their way.

If you are comfortable swimming in the ocean going farther away from the beach, you can go to a spot in this location where warm water is shot out from the power plant. Even close to the beach, you get to see the fish, but at this location where the warm water is constantly pushed out you’ll find many colorful fish swimming in schools. If you can dive little deeper, you can chase the fish and swim with them. Yes, this is where you can be free underwater and enjoy your little mermaid moment.

Perfect beach for observing marine life

If you’re spending some time in Oahu, you’ll start to learn which beaches are good for just relaxing, ideal for surfing, and fun for diving. Electric Beach is indeed a perfect beach for those who enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling. Even if you are not so great at swimming, you get to see plenty of beautiful tropical fish here, and if you are more comfortable in water, you get to dive deeper and see more wildlife there. If you get a chance to rent a car, I highly recommend that you take a drive and go snorkeling at this location if you enjoy being underwater.
