In the Russian language, the word Kremlin is used to describe a protective fortress located in the center of a city. The Astrakhan Kremlin is an architectural gem that has been standing since the 16th-century. This fact is very interesting because during the 18th and 19th centuries, many structures such as this one were demolished due to the need for building materials. The original structure was built using wood in 1587, but was actually rebuilt as a stronger stone fortress in later years. Visitors to the Astrakhan Kremlin can relax in the gardens surrounding the beautiful architecture or go inside the unique 2-floor cathedral which was built in 1699.
