Bovec is the capital of Soča Valley in the Littoral region of Slovenia. Spending just a couple of days in this mountain town is not nearly enough to tick off its key tourist destinations. Spend at least a week instead. The town lies in the northwestern area of the country. Bovec may be outside of the capital, but it is the epicentre of adventure-sports fanatics. The natural challenges of its mountains and rivers are the most attractive aspects of Bovec for some. For the rest, the innate beauty of the town is its best quality. We have prepared for you a definitive list of landmarks and activities that we think are the best things to do in Bovec, Slovenia.

1. Go green all the way at Adrenaline-check Eco Place

To make your adventure in Bovec even more memorable, we recommend booking rooms in the first self-sustainable open-air hostel on the continent. They call it Adrenaline-check Eco Place. They use solar power and recycled materials and hold true with sustainable practices in water utilization and waste management. They have wooden tent houses that can accommodate two to three guests. You won’t have to sleep on rocky ground because they do have proper beds, linen, and pillows. You’d be quite comfy, and if you want to lie down under the stars they have a few hammocks available. The open-air kitchen is fully equipped and is the perfect set-up for a barbecue. Ask about their roster of activities and nearby destinations for adrenaline junkies.

In the 15th century, Kluže Fortress was built with wood as protection from Turkish invasion. In the 18th, century, when the fort was manned by Austrian soldiers in defence of the French, stone was used to fortify it. The brunt of Napoleon’s force destroyed the fortress in 1797. The current structure emerged from modifications in the 19th century. Still, on the ground where the original fortifications were built in 1472, Kluže Fortress rested between Cave del Predil and Carinthia in the direction of the Predil mountain pass. From Bovec, you have to travel about 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) to reach the majestic landmark. Meanwhile, you can reach Fort Hermann from Kluže Fort on a marked route in less than 30 minutes on foot. Named after Capt. Johann Hermann von Hermannsdorf who commanded it during the Napoleon Wars, the fort was built in 1900 to support Kluže Fortress. The fort is now in ruins, but there are galleries that can be reached by stairs. Fort Hermann was destroyed by the Italians during the First World War and it was never restored.

You can aspire to the summit Rombon (2,207 metres/ 7,240 feet) if you are a climber or mountaineer. It is an important mountain of the Julian Alps for adventurers. For tourists who’d rather admire the summit from afar, they can still explore the grassy knolls and beech woods at its feet.

You will be doing yourself a favor by commissioning a guided tour through Outdoor Museum Ravelnik. It’s unlike any museum you’ve ever visited. Instead of galleries, you will be walking through a circular route, which is actually a forest trail that will guide you through the first defense line of the Austro-Hungarian army in the First World War. Guided tours tell the story of the Isonzo front, and you will be inspired by the courage and fortitude of the men who were ordered to defend it.

6. Go river rafting at Slovenia's Emerald Beauty (from USD 76.0)

The Soča River is known to locals as the “Emerald Beauty.” In Slovenia, it is an ideal place for fishing and kayaking. It is also an absolute paradise for photographers. There is beauty all along its length of 137 kilometers (85.13 miles), from the river’s origins at the foot of the Julian Alps to its mouth in the Adriatic Sea. The Soča River is emerald green because of bedrock particles that are suspended in the water. These particles reflect the green in the spectrum when sunlight hits the water. While in Bovec, you must find the time for rafting and engage in other water sports.

Boka Waterfall is not too far from the Soča River. The waterfall has two stages, but both are not exceptionally tall. Nevertheless, Slovenians are proud of the Boka’s width and might. The waterfall is truly a sight to behold when the flow reaches its zenith. What starts as a karst spring becomes a sight to behold especially when the ice melts. The falls acts up during the rainy season as well. There is a viewpoint that tourists can reach if they choose to brave an ascent.
