Fenton is one of the oldest cities in Missouri with history tracing back to the Mississippian civilization. The city is said to have been built on old Indian burial grounds whose existence has been traced to the two earthen mounds in old Fenton’s Mound Street. The city is a protected archaeological site and is home to century old houses. The city is bestowed with a stunning scenic beauty and there are a number of parks in the city. 1. Learn about the city's past at Fenton History Museum

The Fenton History Society was founded in the year 1993 as a non-profit organization aimed at the preservation of the city’s past. The Fenton History Museum was opened in the year 1997 by the society at the historic Swantner house. This 1956 house once belonged to Frank M. Swantner who was a wealthy businessman. He even built a commercial center comprising of a dining room, hotel, salon, livery stable, and merchant stores across the street from his house. When the demolishing processes began in the year 1996, the Fenton Historical Society took over the Swantner house in Church street and did some serious renovations to the property. 2. Go for a relaxing walk on the Unger Park trails


Unger Park is 93 acres (37.6 hectares) of natural beauty filled with green pastures, lakes, and the famous Mermec Greenway Trail. The park was created from St. Louis county land donated by the Alberici company in the year 1974. The park opened its gates for visitors from 1979 and has been a great tourist attraction for the last four decades. The park was earlier named Mermec Bend County Park and was later named after Alberici’s former vice president Mr. Edmund F. Unger. The Edmund F. Unger Memorial Park has a large space for disc golf, several walking/biking trails, a lake for fishing, as well as reservable shelters. It is a great picnic spot and a must-see spot in Fenton.

3. Catch freshwater fishes at Bud Weil Memorial Park


Bud Weil Memorial Park is nestled at the center of Fenton behind the city hall and is a smaller park compared to the many other parks in the city. The park has two reservable shelters with outdoor barbecue grill facilities namely the Hexagon shelter and Domijan shelter with a capacity of 30 and 50 people respectively. The Domijan shelter can be reached through a beautiful stone stairway and this shelter is named after the Croatian stonemason who was once the owner of the land where the park was created. The park is open for public fishing, fish feeding, and also walking pets. The park also has a stunning wood-chipped walking trail.

4. Check out the athletic fields at Fenton City Park


Fenton City Park with its 96 acres (39 hectares) of land space is one of the largest parks with athletic facilities in St. Louis County. The park is a great place to visit for sports enthusiasts as it has eight soccer fields, two basketball courts, seven softball courts, two playgrounds, and six practice fields. There is also a 1.4-mile (2.25 kilometer) trail with spectacular field views for jogs and walks. You can also walk your dog on a leash in this stunning park. The park also has shelters, mini-shelters, and restrooms.

The Winter Brothers Memorial Company donated in 1969 to the creation of George C. Winter Park. The park got a boat ramp in the year 1978 with the funds donated by the Concord Village Lions Club. The Meramec River along with its two boat ramps in the park is used for recreational water activities during summers. During times of the year when there is high water level, large pleasure boats run in till the upstream and serves as a great tourist attraction. Apart from this, the park is a great place to go fishing.

Buder Park is located in the southern banks of the Meramec River across Valley Park. The park was willed out to St. Louis County by G. A. Buder and hence, it has been named after him. The original 140 acres (57 hectares) of parkland got split after the construction of the Interstate 44 and now the park has two divisions - Buder south on the hill and the area close to the river. Westside Park is a very beautiful and well-maintained park located at the end of Woodridge Trails sub-division. This 10-acre (4-hectare) park is home to Westside Lake which is open for public fishing. Surrounding the lake is a scenic 1-mile (1.6 km) trail that is used for walking, jogging, and biking. There are also athletic fields namely a basketball court and a playground. There is a shelter and a mini-shelter located within the park premises available for guests on a reservable basis. The shelter is provided with an electric barbecue grill and restroom facilities. It is a great place to go on short picnics and early morning walks.
