Fatima is one of the most important Catholic shrines in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and has been associated with the Marian apparitions that were purportedly witnessed by three shepherd children at the Cova da Iria in 1917. A small chapel was built there in honor of Our Lady of Fátima, beginning in 1918, and a statue of her was erected. The chapel and statue have since been enclosed within a large shrine and basilicas. Fatima now attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over the world, particularly on the pilgrimage months of May and October. The large torch-light processions in the evening are particularly impressive, often led by Cardinals and Bishops. Around the plaza are shops and stalls selling various religious articles. On the far side of the plaza rises the great Neo-classical basilica with a central tower. It is flanked by colonnades linking the structure with the extensive convent and hospital buildings.
