When you think of the typical British countryside, you would imagine wide sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and open moors, interspersed with picturesque villages, country inns and ancient castles. So where can you find the best representation of this scenery? Many believe it would be the Gower Peninsula in South Wales. Not for nothing is it the United Kingdom’s first designated “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”, as it has an abundance of stunning coastal vistas, gorgeous woodlands and mysterious caves over a relatively small 70 square-mile (180 square-kilometer) area. It, therefore, presents a great opportunity to be based, while staying in an Airbnb vacation rental, for a few days of delightful exploration. Here are 10 great options, so check them out and book one now!
The Gower Peninsula is about a 10-minute drive west of Swansea, Wales’ second-largest city. Surrounded by the Bristol Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, its main draws are the spectacular beaches and cliffs along much of the peninsula’s coastline. The most famous is the Rhossili Bay with its breathtaking sunset views and spectacular coastal vistas, but you will also be charmed by the dramatic Three Cliffs Bay or the gorgeous Oxwich Bay. This cozy cottage is located in the middle of the peninsula, near the village of Reynoldston. It has two bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen and a large garden with patio area. An ideal place to unwind after your explorations around the Gower Peninsula.

Rhossili Bay may be the key attraction on the Gower Peninsula, but do not miss Oxwich Bay, whose pristine beach was voted as Britain’s most beautiful by Travel Magazine in 2007. The long flat sands were once the location of the first airplane flight in Wales way back 1911. The Oxwich castle that overlooks the bay is also historic, as many believe it is the oldest on the peninsula, with evidence of it being inhabited as early as 1459. This guest suite is located in the Oxwich village nearby, a great accommodation if you wish to explore this part of Gower. There are three beds, wifi and TV, and breakfast is provided by the hosts.

While the major attractions are found on the southern coast of the peninsula, there are, nonetheless, interesting locations amid in the less traveled northern coast. The village of Penclawdd is perched on a high location, offering excellent panoramic views of the countryside. Together with the nearby Llanmorlais, it is also famous for its cockles industry, being close to the estuaries where the delicacies are found. This converted barn is near both villages, and it contains a large lounge with a wood-burning stove, TV, dining table and sofas. It also has ample space for parking as well as storage of kayaks or surfboards. There are also sheep, chickens, horses and dogs roaming around the farm area, adding to the rural charm.

Besides the beaches and coastal scenery, the other attraction of the Gower Peninsula is its bevy of charming villages. You can find stone houses, rolling woodlands, and centuries-old buildings are found among them, a quintessential representation of what you would find in the rural areas of Britain. This boutique, self-contained guest house is located in the village of Llanrhidian, which is famous for its St Rhydian and St Illtyd’s Church which was built back in the 13th century. The guest house is a stone’s throw away from the church, and it has its own parking space, a secluded rear courtyard and a front garden.
