Konstanz is one of those classic small German cities, notable for chocolate-box architecture and scenery that takes the breath away. Located as it is on the Swiss border, there’s something of an influence from the other side, especially on weekends, when numerous Swiss residents jaunt across the border to shop in the comparatively cheaper German stores.
Its location places it not only on that border, but on the banks of Lake Constance, from which it takes its name (although in German this is more frequently referred to as die Bodensee). Germany’s largest lake, Constance borders not only the two aforementioned countries, but Austria as well, making trips across the border an option for keen travelers.
There are plenty of attractions here in Konstanz itself, mind you. The Rosgarten Museum is a fine diversion for historians, while the Phalbaumuseum Unteruhlidingen is an open-air Stone Age settlement that will fascinate all visitors. Wine buffs, meanwhile, will find their heaven at the Spitalkellerei, and families will appreciate the SeaLife attraction in the city. All of which leaves only the question of where you’ll stay when you visit. Fortunately, Konstanz is well-served on that front.

1. Historical old town apartment near Lake Constance (from USD 99)
This beautiful accommodation takes you back in time as it’s not only situated within the oldest part of town, it’s also built in the Middle Ages. Of course, it’s completely renovated now and filled with modern amenities but you can still see remnants of the past through the well-preserved medieval stone wall, wooden beams, and the half-timbered structure. The rental sleeps up to three and features a double bed and a full kitchen. It’s also conveniently located close to local culture and sights including the scenic Lake Constance.

2. B&B Hotel: something new (from USD 107)
If you’re not so drawn by the idea of an older, historic building, then Konstanz still has you covered for newly built hotels. The B&B Hotel was built in 2016 and is effortlessly modern. It’s also extremely well-located, right near the banks of the Rhein which you can then follow to the lake shore. There are several restaurants within very close range and the hotel itself offers a breakfast buffet as well as vending machines in the lobby. Also less than two kilometers (1.2 miles) away, you’ll find the University of Konstanz, whose grounds make for a pleasant walk.

3. Hotel Halm: opulent glamour (from USD 150)
If you want to spend your stay in Konstanz in luxurious style, then there are few better places to look than the Hotel Halm. It’s set in a historic building, and that styling does extend inside. However, it’s entirely up-to-date for amenities in its own, classic way. For example, the Bibliothek bar located in the hotel serves exciting cocktails but also features (as any German-speakers may have guessed) its own library. If you need another selling point, you can drive from the hotel for two minutes and be in Switzerland!

Indoors, it sleeps four and offers kitchen and bathroom facilities, making for a perfect place to base yourself for your break. As an added bonus, it’s very affordable, especially for a larger group.

6. Converted workshop (from 90 USD)
This accommodation was previously the workspace for a carpenter; the apartment is named in his honor, billed as Uncle Joe’s Workshop. Don’t worry if you find sawdust off-putting - it last served as a workshop in the 1950s, although it does retain some of its countrified charm. All the conveniences you could expect are laid on; so too, on request, can your breakfast be. A party of up to three can spend their nights here very comfortably and in gorgeous surroundings.

7. Hotel Goldener Sternen: Old-Town style (from USD 129)
One of the most endlessly attractive things about German towns - and particularly those near the border - is the architecture and history that you can feel when staying there. The Hotel Goldener Sternen, in existence since the 18th-century, is one of those buildings that leaves a mark from the moment you see it. Despite its age, it’s modern as anything on the inside. Free WiFi and flat-screen TVs are a feature in all rooms, and the hotel is a perfect base from which to explore the delightful Old Town of Konstanz.

8. A cozy charming attic room with a view
The owner of this spectacular room is quite clear - it’s an attic lodging in a family house, and if you’re looking for silence and solace you’ll be best looking elsewhere. If you want an impressive view of the beautiful town of Konstanz and a bohemian space, you’re in luck. The attached bathroom even has a freestanding bathtub - so you can lock the door and have a soak if you need time to yourself.

9. Room in a timber house
The owners of this house are very clear about what you can expect. The amenities of a fancy hotel are not on offer here, which is reflected in the price. However, it is a lodging that provides you with easy and immediate access to the town centre, with its bars and restaurants; here you will be in the real Konstanz and within easy walking distance of the lake and the many hiking trails around the Swiss border. In short, it’s an uncomplicated accommodation, but there is plenty here to enjoy - and the owners will be on hand with advice, too.
