Mountain Meditation Retreat: Find Real Peace At Liu Gui Vipassana Center
Day 1 of 10 of silent meditation. You’re sitting cross-legged in a bright, hexagonal meditation hall. You hear birds chirp and mountain winds rustle palm fronds. You settle into the peaceful sounds when suddenly a somewhat scratchy recording issues forth a strange, grumbled chant in an ancient language. It goes on for awhile. You scratch your calf and then wonder when it will end. And what the heck is this guy saying? Welcome to the Vipassana retreat in Liu Gui, Taiwan.

A Different Side Of Taipei At The 44 South Village, Taiwan
In between the 1940s and 1950s, many Nationalist soldiers from Mainland China had to relocate to Taiwan along with their families. For this reason, military villages had to be built all around the island, including in big cities such as Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, etc. Although many villages have been demolished, some are still preserved as cultural and historical sites, including one located in the capital of Taiwan, the 44 South Village (四四南村). Since this site is not always written on usual travel guidebooks, it is still less traveled by, which makes it perfect for travelers who love to take the path less trodden!
Attractions
Juifen A Mei Tea House, Taiwan: The Inspiration Behind 'Spirited Away'
Many of you may have watched Hayao Miyazaki's award-winning *Spirited Away* and been blown away by the film's creativity and beautiful artwork. If you loved the movie and happen to be in Taiwan, then you definitely have to make a stop in Jiufen, especially A Mei Tea House, which purportedly is the inspiration behind the lantern-lit bathhouse in the animation.

Suao Cold Spring: A Dip In One Of The World's Two Cold Springs, Taiwan
Summers in Taiwan can get swelteringly hot, and when you feel sticky all day, there is nothing quite like a refreshing cold bath to rejuvenate your senses. And in Suao, a quaint small town in Yilan, you have the option to dip yourself in a bubbly cold spring, which in addition to cooling down your body, also has beneficial properties for your skin! Cold springs are a rare find, with the only other cold spring in the world located in Italy. Suao Cold Spring Park is a popular and wallet-friendly option for a dip in a cold spring if you ever stop by Yilan.

Sunset Scenes And Refreshing Walks At Lover River, Kaohsiung
A visit to Kaohsiung City, the second largest city in Taiwan, is not complete without a stop at the prominent Love River (愛河). Apart from being the city’s most important river, it is also a place where travelers can learn about and witness how much the city has developed in the past few decades.
Night Markets
Complete Guide to Kaohsiung's Night Markets
Kaohsiung, the second largest city in Taiwan, has recently been getting more attention in the tourism industry. And just like any other city on this island, Kaohsiung also has a variety of must visit places including its famous night markets. These night markets are also favorite destinations among locals because they are accessible via public transportation and offer a variety of options for food, fashion and lifestyle.

*This blog post was written by Taiwan Scene. Taiwan Scene is an online travel magazine. We publish __stories__ introducing readers to the culture, scenery and travel possibilities of our homeland, __articles__ to help travelers make the most of their time in Taiwan.* As a visitor to Taiwan, you may be forgiven for not knowing too much about the country’s culture and history. After all, that’s why you’re here – to find out what exactly makes Taiwan great. If there is absolutely one thing you must know, it’s that Taiwan’s culinary scene is right up there with the best in Asia – if not the world – and it’s in capital city Taipei where you’ll find the best of what the island has to offer. Ever growing as a popular destination for foodies due to the diversity of its affordable street food offerings – influenced heavily by the Chinese, Dutch, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish colonies of the past – the food here is way more than just beef noodles (although they’re still pretty damn good). From bustling night markets to hole-in-the-wall restaurants to five-star luxury dining, Taipei’s got it all. Here are 20 Taiwanese dishes you need to try right now.

Exciting Things To Do In Taipei At Night
Because Taipei just happens to be the center of government, finance, and culture, it follows that there are so many interesting things that you’ll surely come across when you visit. Although, both locals and travelers will attest that Taipei is quite different when you visit it in the day, compared to at night. It’s uncontested that Taipei has one of the densest number of restaurants and night markets in Asia, and most of them are full even on weekdays. This is a testament that Taipei really has a thriving nightlife, with most young people surging towards the different sites to hang out and eat at by the end of the day. The whole scene is a bit more relaxed than it is in the daytime, and if you want to see a different side of Taipei and the Taiwanese, here are a couple of sites that you should visit the first time you're exploring Taipei at night.

7 Best Things To Do In Kinmen, Taiwan
Kinmen is an island off the Strait of Taiwan, located just 250 kilometers (150 miles) from the Republic of China. This quiet, little county actually has a very colorful history. Having been one of the key locations during the war, Kinmen (then known as Quemoy) was constantly faced with the threat of being seized and put under military rule. Nowadays, Kinmen is a peaceful and fascinating place. Although it is best known for its knives, candy, and liquor, Kinmen is also slowly increasing in popularity as a tourist destination. Here are just a few of the best things to check out while in Kinmen.

Taipei is a vibrant and exciting city with never-ending shopping and street food that visitors can try. To get there, take a TRA (Taipei Railway Adminstration) train from Taipei Main Station.

Lang Lang Don’t Cry, Taipei: A Local Specialty Café And Animal Shelter
I think it's safe to say that those who travel often are well connected with their emotional selves and have a deep sense of love and respect for all things in life. It is even safer to claim that nothing is more exquisitely pleasing to the soul of travellers than for them to stumble across a hidden gem on their travels. Such was the case for myself in Taipei when I stumbled across 浪浪别哭 'Lang Lang Bie Ku', or Lang Lang Don't Cry, whilst looking for shelter from a late afternoon drizzle. Lang Lang Don't Cry is a pet café which serves up aromatic beverages, tasty sandwiches and highly recommended waffles. But there is a twist to Lang Lang which sets it apart from other similarly-themed cafés: the four-legged occupants found in the café are all strays. But let's start from the beginning.

Food To Try
Food To Try In Taiwan
We’ve all tried, tasted, and fawned over Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai cuisine. But the oft-forgotten Taiwanese cuisine deserves its own place among the giants of delectable Asian delicacies. You’ve not really tried Asian food until you’ve sampled delicious beef noodles, or sunk your teeth into soft gua bao (steamed buns) or sipped some yummy bubble tea! Taiwanese cuisine is heavily influenced by Chinese, Japanese and even Portuguese cuisines. The heaviest influence is from the Fujian (Hokkien) province of China. But the traditional native Taiwanese dishes are not to be discounted, especially, the pork, seafood, chicken and rice dishes. The tropical location of Taiwan also lends a distinct personality to its food, in the form of an abundant use of fresh fruit in the preparation of drinks and fruit teas. Taiwanese food is truly a melting pot of Asian cuisines. So, come along and let’s take a look at the food that you must try while you are in Taiwan!

Taiwan For Two: A 3-Day Adventure From Taipei To Taichung
In early 2023, I found an ad on Instagram from a local travel agency called SMB. In red and blue cursive letters, it read: "Terrific Taiwan", with a caption promising a 4-day, 3-night itinerary for as low as 36,999 PHP (631.79 USD) - flights and hotel included. My mom didn't need much convincing, so we booked the tour for April that year. Although it was meant to be a 4-day trip, we really only had 3 full days in the country, and we spent it hopping from fascinating attractions to amazing restaurants across Taipei and Taichung. I couldn't have asked for a better first experience. Taiwan is known for several iconic attractions, such as Taipei 101, Shifen Waterfall, Chung She Flower Garden, and more. While we chose a group tour with a guide for ourselves, you can also just head to these places on your own. If you need recommendations for what to do and see, keep reading my account of all the places I visited during my 3-day adventure from Taipei to Taichung. *Want to know more about Taiwan?
