I would consider myself a self-appointed afternoon tea connoisseur with the amount of times that I have enjoyed this special British meal across London including at The Ritz, The Four Seasons, The InterContinental, The Athenaeum, Strand Palace Hotel, Asia de Cuba, Monmouth Kitchen and so many more establishments. My most recent afternoon tea experience was at the Docklands Bar & Grill in the Crowne Plaza Hotel and I am thrilled for the opportunity to tell you a little bit about this experience as I feel it’s one that may appeal to you too. This is especially if you’re new to the afternoon tea scene or want to introduce someone who is a bit reluctant to embrace this additional meal in the day (whether it be because of a preconceived view that afternoon tea can be pretentious, the cost can be high or the sheer concern about the affect of their waistline after such an experience). The Docklands Bar & Grill is located at Royal Victoria Dock, Western Gateway, London E16 1AL.

Feel good in the chic and bright decor

You can enter the Docklands Bar & Grill by either entering from the main revolving doors to the Crowne Plaza Hotel and then turning left (which I recommend) or from the separate entrance near the centre-side of the Docklands Bar & Grill. If you enter from the main revolving doors, you will certainly feel an abundance of positivity with the bright, quirky and contrasting colours of the bar area with the elegant yet comfortable and stylish seating area. There is a really chic, fun and relaxing feel to the Docklands Bar & Grill, which makes it quite a comforting and cool place in which to experience afternoon tea. It is not at all pretentious and a really fun place to relax, have a catch-up and enjoy some good food. So, if you’re looking for somewhere funky to go, then the Docklands Bar & Grill, may be the right place for you. Seating for afternoon tea is either behind or around the bar area or in the separate dining area. There is a casual yet fine dining feel to the place, which makes it a wonderful setting for afternoon tea — a bit special but not stuffy.

Great place to introduce newbies to the afternoon tea scene

The seating area is comforting, spacious and feels quite casual rather than formal, which I think is sometimes actually a good thing. This is because a number of afternoon tea establishments have very formal seating arrangements and dress codes, meaning that you have to dress to impress and be on your absolute best behaviour (i.e., following the rules of afternoon tea etiquette). In comparison, the Docklands Bar & Grill is the type of place where you can wear some comfy jeans and a cardigan and really relax whilst still feeling special because of some of the stylish elements in the décor, such as the brightly lit bar.

I feel that afternoon tea at the Docklands Bar & Grill is perfect if you want a leisurely catch-up with your female friends, want to introduce your partner to the idea of afternoon tea or want young family members to get an insight into what afternoon tea is all about, then this place hits the right spot. This is very much because the ambiance is very calm and comforting and the formalities of afternoon tea are much more relaxed, meaning that it’s definitely a suitable setting for first time afternoon tea go-ers.

Mouth-watering and filling items to munch on

The photograph says it all doesn’t it? Plates that are filling, hearty and mean serious business in pleasing your palates and making you feel on top form! Whilst the three plates have not been arranged in the conventional afternoon tea format (desserts on the top, scones in the middle, sandwiches at the bottom), the items on the plates are delicious. Each plate is filled with mouth-watering items that are full of love and flavour.

As you can see, the sandwiches are rather filling and not necessarily the dainty type that you would experience in a formal afternoon tea establishment; however, I think that can be perfect if you’re looking for a sandwich to simply munch down (especially if you’re hungry!) followed by some tea. This again makes the afternoon tea experience less formal and more suitable for newbies on the afternoon tea scene who may find the afternoon tea formalities a bit too much. Docklands Bar & Grill also promise to re-create your childhood memories by baking the perfect treacle tart and I can assure you that they are able to live up to this promise to a T. On offer is also an abundance of tea bags of different flavours for your enjoyment.

5-star service without a doubt

Afternoon tea at Docklands Bar & Grill is priced at 19.50 GBP (23.80 USD) per person and is inclusive of sandwiches, desserts, scones and an unlimited amount of tea bag tea for which brown or white sugar can be added (if you have a sweeter tooth). Now, whilst it isn’t the most ultra formal version of afternoon tea, the service is certainly what you would expect in a fine dining afternoon tea house. This is because it definitely meets the 5 star standard.

I visited Docklands Bar & Grill on a festive day when the Crowne Plaza was completely populated and the Docklands Bar & Grill still managed to ensure that I had a memorable, positive and joyous experience with my family members. The staff try their absolute best to accommodate you and are so very friendly and attentive, without being intrusive. The individuals that work there have real personalities and want to take care of you and make you feel that extra bit special and they do that with such warmth. I would recommend that you visit Docklands Bar & Grill for afternoon tea or any other type of meal in the day or night and I’m sure you will see that I’m right about the service experience.
