Don’t you just love when you visit an area and spot an unexpected charm that fits into the area yet also sparkles? Well, the Dead Dolls House certainly did that for me when I was wondering around Islington in North London. The area, Islington, was mainly known for its poverty; however, it is now being recognised for its well-built townhouses, independent boutiques, antique stores and proximity to the centre of London, which show that Islington does contain areas of affluence and diversity. Dead Dolls House, as its name suggests, in a three-storey townhouse on the popular street of Upper Street at 181 and is a definite place to visit.

Stunning and chic ambience

With a three-storey townhouse, you won’t be surprised to hear that there are multiple rooms in which you can relax, dine and even have an intimate and private gathering. The Parlour bar, which is on the ground floor and includes the main restaurant, is simple yet chic in its decorative style. With whitewashed walls and black painted designs, the room feels airy yet cosy at the same time due to the little candles that are lit on the tables (even during the day time!).

Other rooms included in the Dead Dolls House are The Library, which is an intimate private room with its own bar; The Drawing Room, which has gorgeous huge windows that overlook the historic Upper Street and Islington Town Hall and then finally, my favourite room, which is The Ballroom. The Ballroom is on the top floor and after dinner service, it transforms into an exclusive and snazzy late night cocktail bar. Stylish, unusual décor with friendly staff create a buzzing environment in the Dead Dolls House, that is a must to experience. It is an appealing place to get-away from the chaos of central London where you can taste some hearty good food. The establishment is open from 9 am to 12 pm and closes between 2 am to 4 am, contingent on the day of the week that you visit. To enjoy brunch or have a late night cocktail, this place will be open and ready to offer you a quirky time.

A British foodies dream

Diversity and different cuisines is rife in multicultural London; however, you must sample British cuisine and where best to do it than a whimsical, edgy and truly British building? The British are known to love munching and create more meals than the usual three a day. In Britain, you have breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and supper sittings and Dead Dolls House is offering you all of these opportunities, and some which would even appeal to the healthy-conscious. As a vegetarian, I was impressed with the quality and options available, especially considering the food truly was good value for money (which is important in such an expensive city!).

As you can see from the photograph, I had the smashed avocado on toast (with salad) and the herb fried potatoes with chilli. My fellow munching companion had a half roast chicken which was served with duck fat roasties, carrots, kale, a Yorkshire pudding and gravy. No doubt your mouth has started watering as you’ve glanced at the photograph! The food was fresh, filling and hearty. I especially enjoyed the creamy avocado on toast which had a sharp citrus flavour to it because of the fresh lemon that was mixed into the spread. The herb fried potatoes with chilli were crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and had a nice kick to them.

A dessert not to be shared

Having devoured the large portions on offer at Dead Dolls House, you may think that you won’t have room for a desert, so I am pleased that I write this article to advise you to make sure that you save some space. The dessert is certainly not something to be missed, let alone shared as it tastes brilliant! I had the chocolate and peanut butter brownie with a charred pear and crème fraiche and practically inhaled it. The brownie was so chocolatey and gooey and tasted wonderful as it was warm. Whilst I was initially apprehensive of peanut butter, chocolate and pears being one dessert, I have to tell you that the chef at Dead Dolls House has definitely converted me to an individual that believes in this combination! Accompanied by a cup of peppermint tea or a cocktail, the chocolate and peanut butter brownie is definitely a crowd-pleaser and something you should save yourself to enjoy.

Consider planning a private event here

If you’re looking for well executed classic British dishes in a quirky British townhouse then head on over to Dead Dolls House. It is especially known for housing some brilliant private events for birthdays, so do make sure you consider checking it out if you’re looking for a venue to celebrate a special occasion. The management team are happy to decorate the venue to your liking but also make suggestions and assist you in decorating the venue in a style that you want. Having a late license also means that if you’re planning a party, you won’t need to find another late-night-venue to continue your celebrations. Are there any caveats to the brilliant experience on offer at Dead Dolls House? Well, whilst there are so many different rooms in which you can experience this establishment, The Parlour bar and main restaurant can get quite chilly, so do make sure you take a scarf and have some warm clothing. I can imagine this place to be buzzing and perfect during the summertime though!

A shabby chic setting, in a diverse area that reflects and represents people from different walks of life, is a place where you will feel comfortable and at home. The fact that the Dead Dolls House is within an actual townhouse literally does mean you’re in a home!
