As travelers, we constantly seek, not just for a room, but an authentic experience. Accommodation is more than just a bed to sleep in. It is interaction with the host, learning about the culture, and getting inside information about what happens in the domestic scene of a place. In this sense, deciding where to stay is important. It surpasses just the basic requisites of convenience and accessibility (and if you’re like me, price). Accommodation transcends to become a setting, a capsule for adventure.
Ulaanbaatar has a lot of accommodations to choose from including some reasonably priced city hotels. However, this list mainly focuses on again, not just convenience and accessibility, but those that seek to let their visitors experience Mongolian culture in its truest sense.
Here are the best places to stay in Ulaanbaatar for the quintessential traveler:
We handpicked these listings carefully, considering (wherever possible) Superhost status, recent guest reviews, location, accommodation type, prices, availability of dates, decor, and amenities. The image galleries get refreshed with the latest updates regularly. They were last updated on April 04, 2024.

2. Stay in a Mongolian nomadic family's ger and farm (from USD 60)
Mongolia’s iconic accommodation is the yurt or ger. It’s a portable, round tent covered with animal skin or felt. It was and still currently is used as dwellings by the Mongolian nomads. This Mongolia national ger house is located very near the city. The family also picks you up from the airport to take you to the ger. From there, the family will also give you time to immerse in their farm which has about 50 black yaks, and a couple of horses. This will depend on the season though. If you come in spring, it might be a little difficult to spot some yaks.
The hosts and siblings, Oyuntsetseg and Bodro, are also constantly present to show you around and offer you small bits of information about Mongolian culture and life. They even cook for you so you can taste Mongolia’s dishes. If you want a deeper immersion, this family also coordinates with the herdsman, Bashka and his wife, Hosoo, so that they can take you via horseback through a snowy pass to experience what a true nomad’s life feels like.

3. Retrace back ancient Mongolian dwellings by staying in a ger (from USD 20)
Located in the Ger District of Ulaanbaatar, this Mongolian dwelling again, provides a great setting for an authentic Mongolian experience. The host, Munkh, is considered a superhost on Airbnb. It’s really more for him that you should stay in this yurt or ger, which checks all the basic requisites of a dwelling - clean, near the city center and railway station, and has a direct bus route going to it from the airport.
It’s Munkh though who makes the stay extra special. His whole family is involved from pickup to drop-off. The mother cooks lovely meals and offers you warm milk as a welcome drink. Munkh also gives you a local SIM Card so you can contact him anytime. Apart from this, he also serves as a very efficient tour agent without billing it as an extra fee.

5. The two-in-one tour and accommodation punch with Sunpath Mongolia Tour & Hostel (from USD 23)
Sunpath Mongolia Tour and Hostel or the former Sunpath Mongolia is found in Central, Ulaanbaatar. There’s free WiFi access, and a selection of triple room sharing, double rooms, and private rooms. Each room also has a hot tub and a seating area. One review says it’s “the cleanest places we have ever stayed in.”
The hostel is about 400 meters (1,312 feet) from Sukhbaatar Square, 500 meters (1,640 ft) from the National Museum of Mongolia History, and 700 meters (2,296 ft) from Chinggis Khan Statue. But perhaps what makes it so efficient and sellable is the fact that Dolijmaa truly cares about giving her guests a great time. She speaks English quite well so you’ll have no problem talking to her about your plans and itinerary. The tours are also one of the most organized that you’ll find in Ulaanbaatar for its price and quality including excursions to the Gobi Desert.

6. Try a traditional Mongolian apartment in the city center
This place is really eye candy. It seems like it was taken out of the pages of Kinfolk. The apartment is tastefully decorated in colorfully embellished and handmade furniture. The apartment can comfortably take in four guests at a time. It also has two beds and one bedroom. There’s a small shop just below and a big store or hypermarket is just a hundred meters (328 ft) from it in case you need anything like ingredients for cooking, toiletries, and whatnot. The main street is also only about a five-minute walk though in case you don’t like the idea of cooking. There are plenty of restaurants and small eateries in the area.
