Maithon Dam literally means Mother’s Abode, it is the biggest reservoir of the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). The Maithon Dam is at Maithon, which is 48 kilometers (29.8 miles) from the city of Dhanbad, in Jharkand, India. The dam is constructed on the Barakar River and is spread over 6 sq/km (3.7 sq/miles). It is 4,789 meters (15,712 feet) long and 50.2 meters (165 feet) high. It was specially designed for flood control and generates 60,000 kW of electricity. It has an underground power station, the first of its kind in South East Asia. The Maithon Dam has 13 locks in total and has good lighting and boating facilities for tourists as well!

Birsa Munda Park is a tourist attraction near Dhanbad City and attracts people from all age groups. The park is situated at about 8 km (4.97 miles) from the Dhanbad railway station. It can also be reached by road (G.T. Road) via Govindpur near Hirak Road. The park is located about 2 km (1.24 miles) from Dhanbad Airport. The park has a walkway, toy trains, joy rides for children, food courts and lush greenery spread out over a large space of land. Panchet Dam was constructed over the Damodar River at Panchet in Dhanbad. It was built by Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) as a result of the catastrophic flood of 1943, and it was operational in 1959. The scenic Panchet Dam has an amazing view of the sunset and also has a nice picnic spot with a well maintained garden around.

Maithon Lake is a popular sightseeing attraction in Maithon. Tourists visiting it can engage in activities like boating and fishing, they can sit down by the deck to fish or row a boat to the centre of the lake and can practice angling in the midst of nature. For accommodation there is a charming rest-house located on an island in the lake. There are other attractions around the lake like the deer park and the bird sanctuary.
