Also known in the area as the “Great Lake”, Lake Montauk is not a naturally occurring body of water, having been created in 1927 when a hole was blasted on the northern shoreline to connect a smaller lake with the Block Island Sound. Since then, however, it has become a fixture of the region and is a hugely popular destination for those who are keen to do a little fishing. As a note of curiosity, rumour has it that Frank Mundus, a boat operator who operated out of Lake Montauk, was the inspiration for the character Quint in the book and motion picture Jaws.
