Admire the elegant architecture

This traditional Hindu temple is simple yet vibrant and alluring. Visitors are mesmerized by its striking presence. The awe-inspiring beauty of this 14th-century structure is a real gem on India’s cultural landscape. Situated near Pushkar Lake, the temple is constructed from polished marble and handsome stone. Brahma Temple’s two most distinctive features are the fabulous 70 foot (21 meters) high red spire and the bird motif at the entrance. The arched entrance is replete with delightful pillared canopies. Past the gate is an impressive pillared outdoor hall called Mandapa.

Explore the Garbhagriha

A short distance from Mandapa is the Garbhagriha area, which is also the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. It is here where visitors can view a phenomenal life-sized statue of the four-faced Brahma resting in a cross-legged, seated posture on an attractive lotus pedestal. Brahma is often characterized as possessing four faces that represent the four holy Hindu scriptures, Vedas, the four Yugas or periods in the Hindu religion, and the four directions: north, south, east, and west.

Visit Pushkar Lake

The Brahma Temple is only 0.4 miles (0.7 kilometers) from Pushkar Lake, so no trip to this temple is complete without a visit to this sacred lake. Many locals believe that the lake was created by the lotus petal that fell from Brahma’s Lotus. Time your visit right and you can relish an amazing Indian sunset over this mystical body of water.

No photography

Visitors are expected to store their shoes and phone in a locker before entering the temple. You must also stow your camera as photography is prohibited inside the temple.

Wheelchair access

With several flights of marble steps to climb, this attraction can be difficult to manage for someone who is wheel-chair bound or has limited mobility.

Donations

Entry to the Brahma Temple is free but there are donation boxes available if you want to present an offering. A one USD donation is more than enough, however, you should not feel obligated to donate.

Flower petal scam

Beware of strangers bearing flowers near the temple. There is a common swindle called the flower-petal scam that involves someone offering either a flower or petals to you and then demanding an outrageous amount of money. If you refuse to pay, they make a loud scene and even go so far as to get the police involved! So steer clear of anyone approaching you in this manner. Simply wave them away and walk on.

Dress modestly

Considering Brahma Temple is a revered place of worship, visitors who enter the premises are expected to wear conservative clothing. For women, a headscarf or shawl with pants or a full-length dress should be sufficient but avoid short skirts, low-cut tops, and spaghetti straps.

Busy season

November is the time when Brahma Temple is the most festive. It is the month of Kartik Poornima celebration and many locals and tourists take part in the festivities. Other attractions such as fun-fairs are also held near the temple grounds. If you want to avoid crowds, bypass this month and go between February and October.
