Behind the Beans: A Closer Look at Our KGG Roastery Tour

Our journey into Singapore’s coffee culture began with an exclusive roastery tour at KGG, a name synonymous with quality and tradition in the local coffee scene. Founded in 1988, KGG has been a cornerstone of Singapore’s coffee heritage, supplying quality coffee powder to local coffee shops and bringing the taste of traditional kopi and teh to homes everywhere with Kim’s Duet. Tucked away in Bedok North’s JTC Bedok Food City, this roastery offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the meticulous process of coffee roasting.

1. Witnessing coffee roasting in action

Stepping into the roasting floor, we were greeted by massive machines that have been the backbone of KGG’s signature roast. A remarkable story unfolded as we learned that these machines were assembled by the founder, Jason Soon, and his team during the pandemic, a testament to their ingenuity and resourcefulness.

Our guide led us through the intricacies of local kopi, explaining how it differs from Western coffee. It’s not just about the beans (Robusta vs. Arabica) but also the roasting process. Local kopi is roasted longer with sugar and butter or margarine, resulting in a richer, more intense flavor profile. Tasting the roasted beans, we experienced the transformation firsthand. Watching the skilled roasters at work was a mesmerizing spectacle, a true revelation for any coffee enthusiast.

2. Packaging perfection

After the roasting process, we followed the beans as they were ground into the powder that fills the familiar sachets and packets. Did you know that KGG was the first roastery in Singapore to start packing coffee in aluminium foil bags instead of traditional tins? This innovative packaging ensures better hygiene, preserves the coffee’s fragrance, and guarantees consistent quality in every cup. The entire packing process, featuring KGG’s iconic gold packaging, was a fascinating sight.

3. Coffee tasting and pulling

Our tour culminated in a special coffee tasting session on the second floor of the roastery. Here, Jason and his son prepared coffee the traditional way, using stainless steel pots and coffee socks - a stark contrast to modern espresso machines or drip coffee makers. Jason explained the technique of “Kopi Pulling,” where the coffee is poured back and forth between pots to create the pressure needed for optimal extraction. This method extracts a strong, concentrated brew that is often diluted with water, condensed milk, or evaporated milk. (Learn how to order like a local here.)

Jason made it seem effortless, but attempting Kopi Pulling ourselves revealed the true skill and patience the technique requires. Mastering the steeping duration and the knack of pulling to introduce air bubbles is essential for a perfect brew. Despite a few spills and minor mishaps, the experience left us with a newfound appreciation for this traditional method of coffee preparation.

4. How to book your roastery tour

To experience the magic of KGG’s roastery for yourself, you’ll need to plan ahead. Tours are only available on weekdays and require a minimum of five participants. Book your slot at least three days in advance by emailing the roastery. While transportation is not provided, the experience is well worth the effort. It isn’t just informative; it’s a deep dive into the heart of Singapore’s coffee heritage, a tradition cherished by locals for generations. For any coffee enthusiast visiting Singapore, this is an experience not to be missed.

In line with modern sustainability practices, Citadines Rochor Singapore has implemented several eco-friendly measures. The property consciously avoids bathtubs and bottled water in the rooms, instead offering a common water dispenser and jug for guests to use. Additionally, individually bottled toiletries have been replaced with more sustainable options, ensuring that your stay at Citadines Rochor Singapore is not just comfortable but also aligned with the principles of sustainable living.

3. Comprehensive amenities

More than just a place to stay, Citadines Rochor Singapore offers a versatile living experience that caters to both short and long-term guests. One of the standout features is the Residents’ Kitchen, a shared kitchen available for guests who have opted for room types without a kitchen. It is thoughtfully equipped with sticker labels available for the shared fridge, allowing you to safely store your own food if you wish to prepare your meals. Adding to the charm, there is even a herb garden adjacent to the kitchen, where you can find fresh spices like lemongrass, basil, ginger, and mint, enhancing your culinary endeavors.

The Residents’ Lounge is another inviting space where you can unwind and socialize. Whether you’re looking to relax with a book, catch up on some work, or meet fellow travelers, the lounge provides a comfortable environment to do so. If you prefer a more relaxing way to unwind, the outdoor swimming pool provides a refreshing escape amidst the bustling city.
