Selinunte is an archaeological area located in the southwestern coast of Sicily, close to Castel Vetrano in Trapani area. Selinunte was at the western end of the ancient Greek colonies, and experienced several conflicts with the civilizations nearby, the Carthaginians and the indigenous Sicilian people.
Today Selinunte is a beautiful archaeological park, placed on a hill facing the sea and the namesake river. Close to the archaeological area you can find a little seaside village with restaurants, hotels, bars and all the necessary in order to have a great trip.
Enjoy an exciting walk through the ancient acropolis of Selinunte
The Acropolis are antique citadels, raised on high grounds and surrounded by walls during the ancient Greek era. Inside these citadels, there used to be a central square (agorà), temples and residences.
Where now lays the archaeological park of Selinunte, there used to be a big acropolis that at its peak counted about 30,000 people, with temples, tombs, residences and so on.
Once you get at the main entrance you will be amazed by the wideness of this archeological area and the beauty of its landscape. Here you can follow different paths that will lead you, through an untouched nature, to many of the still-existing monuments.
Find the Temple of Hera, the best preserved monument of this archaeological area
Located in the east hill of Selinunte you will find the Temple of Hera, named also Temple E. This historical building, dating back from 450 B.C., is the best preserved of this area: indeed, between 1956 and 1959 it has been raised again using its original materials.
This temple is devoted to Hera, the goddess of fertility and marriage, wife of Zeus, who is the father of gods and goddess according to the Greek mythology.
From this high spot you will enjoy an astonishing view on the sea and on all this natural area. The Temple of Hera is a Doric column style temple with 6 columns on the short side and 15 on the long side. During the excavating process archaeologist discovered many artefacts that are now located at the archaeological museum of Palermo, the capital city of Sicily.
Enjoy a charming walk through nature and reach the Temple C
The several monuments and ruins located in the Selinunte archaeological park are named in alphabetic order: this way you will always know where you are.
The temple that you can see in picture is the Temple C, devoted to Apollo, son of Zeus and one of the most complex characters of the Greek mythology: Apollo indeed was the god of the Sun, music, poetry, truth, and many other attributes.
Unfortunately the colonnade of the temple has been collapsing for centuries and in 1925 only this sequence of 14 columns on the long side could be raised again. This temple is a Doric style columns temple, bigger than the Temple E, with 6 columns on the short side and 17 on the long side.
From this spot, nestled in a beautiful and luxuriant natural area of hills and valleys, you will have another amazing view on the sea and the entire Selinunte landscape.
