Right in the heart of midtown Manhattan lies The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA); it is a celebration of works by many artists from the 18th to 19th century. The museum holds works like “The Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh and silkscreen paintings of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol. It is a place to experience art through paintings, sculptures, films, architecture and performance arts.

Free audio guide to help you understand the artists and their works

Be it an art connoisseur or an amateur who knows nothing about art, you will find the MoMa welcoming. The museum hands out free audio guides that you can take with you around the museum. The guide describes prominent pieces in the museum, giving you information about the artist and their inspiration for their art works. The audio guide will also share with you on what to look out for, describing the techniques that artists use. This helps viewers to better understand the simplicity and complexity of each work. The audio guide also serves as a directory to all the pieces that are on display at the museum.

Often, visiting art museums can get a bit overwhelming when you do not know where to start but the guide at MoMa has suggestions for routes you can take depending on the duration you intend to stay. Furthermore, the audio guide has an inbuilt camera, allowing you to take pictures of the day and email it to yourself for keepsake.

Relax and rest in the museum’s Sculpture Garden

Quiet outdoor seating at the museum’s sculpture gardens.

After spending the day indoors, how about taking a breather in the museum’s sculpture garden? Take a stroll to enjoy the sculptures or you can have a seat on the many chairs staggered around the garden. Comprising of trees and a pond, this tranquil garden serves as a place for visitors to rest and reflect on the world. At times, the garden is used for live performances and events organised by the museum.

A vibrant atmosphere with ever changing works

Besides the permanent exhibits at the museum, you can also enjoy film screenings, watch performances or take up a class at the museum. Films are shown daily and cost from 8-10 USD per ticket. Live performances and installations create a vibrant atmosphere to the museum and happen seasonally, most of which are free for visitors. If you have more time in New York, I suggest taking up a class to learn about particular artists or learn about the different styles of art. These classes allow you to go depth in appreciating art. Activities at the museum are always changing, so be sure to check the official website for a full listing of the activities you can do while you are there.
