Events to look out for:
Times Square is always buzzing with energy, but it gets even more lively on New Year’s Eve. With lights, fireworks, and cheers from excited onlookers, the famous New Year’s Eve Ball Drop is quite an experience. You can write your New Year’s wish down on one of the Times Square Confetti along with thousands of others, and watch it all rain down at midnight. Be sure to attend this event if you’re here on December 31 and usher the new year in the best way possible.
Guess what? There’s one special day in the year when Times Square is not bustling with energy, but rather exuding a calm vibe. On the summer solstice, usually on June 21, Solstice in Times Square: Mind Over Madness Yoga celebrates the longest day of the year in a unique way. Thousands of health and wellness enthusiasts participate in a mass wellness session, mainly featuring yoga. This is an unmissable and enriching experience to try if visiting in June!

About Times Square
Times Square has quite an eventful past, dating back to 1898. Formerly called the Long Acre (or Longacre) Square, the mostly lackluster square was home to William H. Vanderbilt’s American Horse Exchange. In the early 1900s, things changed when the Times Tower was built as the headquarters for the Times, and the place was renamed Times Square. In fact, it was the Times that started the New Year’s Eve extravaganza that has gained so much popularity today.
In the following decades, Times Square went through many ups and downs, suffered the consequences of war and the Great Depression, and even became an area known for criminal activities. With years of economic progress, it came out strong in the end and is now on most people’s bucket lists.
Tips for visiting:
- Times Square is accessible, with wheelchair-friendly sidewalks, seating areas, and other facilities. It's also serviced by several wheelchair-friendly stations.
- According to the official website of Times Square, there are many options for budget travelers as well. Grab cheap bites from eateries like All'Antico Vinaio, Carmine's, or Dim Sum Palace. You can also get affordable drinks at places such as Rum House, Jimmy's Corner, and The Dicken's.
