Whether you are wanting to relax on a beach or experience a truly Greek island, Kefalonia is the place to start. As the largest of Greece’s Ionian islands, Kefalonia is easily accessible by air and by sea, and is easy to get around. Picturesque beaches and stunning caves are only a fraction of what you can expect to find while visiting this paradise. Plan on giving yourself an extra night here, as you never know what kind of fun you may miss out on!

Relax on the best beaches in Greece

A quiet Kalamia Beach offers peaceful bliss for those who seek it

Let’s be honest, you are there for the beaches. No one visits Greece without spending a day soaking up the sun next to the bluest water Earth has to offer. The real question is, which beach is best? The most popular beach on Kefalonia is easily Myrtos, just 35 kilometers north of Argostoli. You’ve seen it on Pinterest, now see it for yourself! The island features more than 30 beaches for you to explore, so don’t feel obligated to stay in one place! Smaller, more exclusive beaches like Kalamia, near Lassi, offer a sandy, secluded getaway.

Visit Melissani Cave and make your Instagram followers drool

Melissani Cave is a must-see while visiting Kefalonia

It would truly be a shame to visit Kefalonia and not enter Melissani Cave in the heart of Sami. It’s bright blue water set below what could be described as a view into the heavens is as surreal as it gets. One caveat, it is an extremely popular destination and the possibility of being swarmed by tourists is real. However, it does not take long to experience the cave, so be sure to wait until the crowd dissipates for a more intimate outing. When you’re ready to go, you will enter down a short tunnel and then board boats for a quick tour of the cave!

Dine with locals that treat you like family

One of the best things you can do on any trip is eat like a local, and Kefalonia allows you to do just that. Oskar’s Restaurant, located in Lassi, is the perfect place to observe Greek hospitality at its finest. Family owned and operated, you are sure to be greeted with open arms and sincere smiles. Be sure to stay for dance night on Thursdays and let loose with the locals!

Take a day trip to nearby islands

Kefalonia is a lot of fun, but depending on how much time you’ve got, it pays to leave the island to explore elsewhere. Hop on a ferry and head to Zakinthos to check out other famous greek destinations like Shipwreck Beach and the Blue Caves. Much like Melissani Cave, these are extremely popular tourist destinations. While it can be a hassle dealing with the tour guides, you can easily haggle them down on prices. Even better, arrange for a private tour guide and avoid the crowded boats. The Blue Caves are accessible on foot, whereas Shipwreck Beach requires a boat.

Don’t pass up a visit to Kefalonia!

If you are looking for a memorable vacation full of sun soaked adventure, Kefalonia is the island for you. It’s recommended that you spend at least 4 full days to enjoy everything there is to offer. In order to make transportation easier, don’t hesitate to rent a moped and explore on your own. Get out there and create some memories that will last a lifetime!
