The Netherlands has long been famous for the legalisation of prostitution, as well as the Dutchess’ open-mindedness about such issues, including homosexuality, drugs, and porn. Holland’s capital city, Amsterdam, has the first and oldest sex museum in the world (since 1985). Located on Damrak street, next to the Red Light District, Venustemple Sex Museum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Amsterdam. The museum has three floors in total, exhibiting an extensive collection of erotic photos, paintings, objects, and even recordings to enhance the experience of viewing the sensual-love concept. The total entrance fee is 4 EUR (approximately 4.50 USD). The minimum age requirement to visit the museum is 18. Please do not read on if you are under the required age.

Visitors will be seeing different perspectives of the art of loving throughout the centuries, translated into thousands of shapes and forms. Entering the museum, and on each floor, you will be going through different halls (Casanova, Marquis de Sade, Valentino, Catharina The Great, Oscar Wilde, Marquise De Pompadour, Vargas) and galleries named after famous figures from the history of eroticism. For example, the Casanova Gallery was named after an Italian writer known for being a notorious seducer of women. The Valentino Gallery was also named after Rudolph Valentino - the Italian film star, as well as the world’s first male sex symbol.

On both the first and second floors, you will find the massive Venus Gallery displaying a large collection of erotic objects, and photos, describing the concept of sex during the Roman empire. Venus - a mythological figure, and the Roman goddess of Love, was also regularly worshiped, and depicted with Cupid at hand by the Romans.

Many statues, photos, and recordings about Marilyn Monroe’s life story can be found on both the first and second floors, and are also exhibited in the Venus Gallery. Born in Los Angeles (California, U.S.A.), Marilyn was not only a classic Hollywood actress and model, but also a popular sex symbol of the 1950s. She was famous for playing the ‘dumb blonde’ role in many big films, such as the Noir Niagara, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, and The Seven Year Itch.

Her most important gift was her special relationship with the camera. In a period of unemployment, Marilyn started to work as a model and was asked to post for some nude photographs. Until then, she had always refused to stand in front of the camera in that way. However, the offer came during a time when she was without money, and thus she accepted.

Not long after Marilyn succeeded with her own film production company in late 1954 - Marilyn Monroe Product MMP, she died unexpectedly at the age of 36. Marilyn is still to this day considered a major icon of the American popular culture.

More and more freedom in Amsterdam

In total, Amsterdam has two sex museums (Venustempel and Erotic Museum) and one newly opened prostitution museum in the Red Light District. Walking through the Red Light District, and checking out the sexy ladies that stand behind the windows is a typical tourist experience you must not miss while in Amsterdam, and other big cities in the Netherlands.
