If art and design are what you like, then there is no better place to visit than London’s Victoria and Albert museum. Located in the world-famous museum district of South Kensington, this real treasure of a museum is sure to captivate art lovers of all ages. It’s easy to fall in love with this architectural gem as well as the astounding exhibits on show. The Victoria and Albert museum combines education with an enjoyable day out for the whole family.
Art from around the world
The Victoria and Albert museum houses artworks and designs from all over the world. In total there are literally millions of artefacts held by the organisation, although not all of these are on display at the same time. Instead, find a wonderful collection of jewellery, textiles, as well as furniture from past times. The museum is a must for art lovers and fans of design. You’ll find that many of the exhibits on show are from the furthest-flung corners of the earth, such as jewellery from the Mughal empire in Persia. Local handicrafts from Art and Crafts movement leader Sir William Morris are also available to those who love textiles and furniture design.
Crafts from 3,000 years ago are on display
The works of art and crafts at the Victoria and Albert museum date back to around 3,000 years ago. Some of the earliest collections on show are items from the Neolithic period. You will be able to browse everyday objects from centuries ago. Discover some of mankind’s earliest bottles and vases made from decorative ceramic. There is a unique collection of coins depicting early Roman emperors that is certainly worth a visit.
At the heart of London's museums
This beautiful museum is at the heart of South Kensington, alongside the Science museum as well as the Natural History museum. There’s a lot to see at these three locations, however, it’s recommended visitors spend a day or two visiting each one as it takes time to appreciate the exhibits. It’s so easy to just get lost in these great buildings. The Victoria and Albert museum itself covers around seven square miles of gallery space in total after renovations in previous years. There are six floors to discover too, each with its own treasures. Visitors can enjoy a cup of coffee and sweet treats at the Victoria and Albert cafe.
Admission and opening times
Visitors can enter the museum for free. This includes adults as well as children of all ages. The Victoria and Albert museum holds special exhibitions throughout the year and, in most cases, there will be a ticket charge for these. You can find out more about the museum’s calendar of events via the website. Tickets for these normally start at 12 GBP (approximately 18 USD) to 9 GBP (approximately 13 USD).
Opening times for the museum are 10.00am to 5.45pm daily (This is including weekends).
