As the starting point for tours to Fraser Island (just off the coast of Queensland), Hervey Bay is often a point of transit rather than a holiday destination for most. But that doesn’t mean you have to settle for accommodation that’s less than desirable. With its wooden cabin concept, Aussie Woolshed Backpackers Hervey Bay offers a unique experience that promises urban comfort while keeping you in touch with nature.

Wooden cabin concept

Courtyard of the compound

It is pretty amusing that Aussie Woolshed Backpackers Hervey Bay created a mini forest in the middle of a rather urban town. Though extremely accessible, the accommodation is fenced-up with towering trees occluding virtually any building outside of its perimeters. Guests then get the seamless illusion that they’re secluded and away from the rest of the world, the perfect getaway from the busyness of everyday life. Signposts and benches are made of wood, and hammocks hang in between trees. Evidently, Woolshed Backpackers take theming really seriously here.

Room types range from ensuite twin-sharing rooms to 8/10 Bed Shearers Quarters Dorms (with the option of female-only dorms as well), but all adhere to the cabin living concept. Of note, several of their dorm options have private – and extremely clean – ensuite facilities, including that of the cheapest option available. The bed is also of well-pocketed spring, with thick linens that would allow one to nestle in for a good night’s rest. In fact, I’m recommending Aussie Woolshed Backpackers Hervey Bay because it afforded me the best sleep I had in nights after staying in a series of backpackers’ hostels while on my road trip.

Tip: if you’re traveling as a couple but do not require a private twin-sharing room, the Shearers Quarters Dorms also have double beds for you to choose from.

Cozy communal living

Lounge area and adjacent kitchen

While most backpacker accommodations in Australia have common lounge areas and kitchen amenities, Aussie Woolshed Backpackers Hervey Bay gives the feeling like you’re at home at your exotic new decked-out crib. You would be surprised by how luxurious and homely the lounge/kitchen area here is. With its pristine décor and wooden log scaffold, its interior design is at once modern and laid back - because traveling on a budget doesn’t mean you don’t get to travel in style.

Nevertheless, its kitchen is significantly smaller than most of the industrial-sized kitchens in hostels. But that’s precisely why it feels like home. Lavished with an over-the-counter-top layout, a magnetic knife-holding strip and a granite marble slab as a chopping board, it sure doesn’t feel like a budget accommodation at all. And don’t be fooled by its size, because it has virtually everything you need. From refrigerators to microwaves, kettles to toasters, coffee to tea, Aussie Woolshed Backpackers Hervey Bay’s kitchen is fully equipped for you to whip up a feast (with your own groceries purchased from a nearby supermarket, of course). At the same time, you’ll get to meet other aspiring-master-chef guests and perhaps trade a recipe or two!

Because Hervey Bay’s a quaint town with little nightlife outside of its bars, it is likely that you’ll find yourself in the lounge seeking some friendly late-night entertainment. There’s a foosball table and a dart set in the lounge area right next to the kitchen. With an approximate maximum of 50 guests at a time, you’re likely to bump into the same guests multiple times per day. So why not make some friends and challenge them to a game of foosball or darts?

Too tired after a long day of traveling and just want to sink in relaxation? No problem either. There’re comfy couches and beanbags that make you go “ahhhhhh” right before their hypnotic effect hits you and you enter dreamland. If, for whatever reason, you’ve brought work along to complete on the nights of your trip, the lounge also doubles up as a conducive workspace with tables and power points all around. There’s also complimentary coffee and tea available at the kitchen, should you require fuel for the night.

Dining with a View

Watching the sunset while barbecuing along the beach

There’s also an outdoor barbecue pit in the courtyard to complete the outdoor experience. But if you wish to watch the sunset and enjoy the ocean breeze while having your dinner, the staff will gladly direct you to the free-to-use barbecue pits along the beach just a short walk away.

The outdoor experience (without actually living outdoors)

If you’re like me and enjoy the idea of camping but can’t seem to survive without the modern comforts of a concrete roof and proper bed to sleep at night, then Aussie Woolshed Backpackers Hervey Bay is just the accommodation you’re looking for. Luxurious for a budget backpackers’ accommodation, you might leave Aussie Woolshed Backpackers Hervey Bay wondering if you’ve paid enough for such a comfortable stay. If you find it too good to be true, it’s because it is.
