1. Tōdai-Ji Temple

One of the important attractions in Nara, Tōdai-Ji Temple was constructed in the 8th century and is considered a World Heritage Site. And the must-see sight at this location includes a giant Buddha statue made of bronze called Nara Daibutsu. This Buddha statue is one of the largest in the country. With its construction that began in 752, this attraction makes it the second oldest in Japan. The attraction also features one of the pillars which has a hole, the same size as the Nara Daibutsu’s nostril. It is said the whoever passes through the hole can attain happiness.

2. Kasuga-taisha

Constructed by the Fujiwara family during the 8th century, Kasuga-taisha, also known as the Kasuga Grand Shrine is a sacred place in the country and several Shinto deities are said to be preserved in this location. Considered as a World Heritage Site and one of Nara’s model shrines, Kasuga-taisha is adorned with multiple lanterns that give off a mysterious and elegant atmosphere. In addition, there’s Shinen Manyo Botanical Garden located within the temple grounds.

3. Nara National Museum

Towards the east of Kofuku-ji Temple and west of Nara-koen Park sits Nara National Museum. The museum building has two segments - the first segment is on the west side where the older building is located. This segment is called Nara Butsuzo-kan, also known as Hall of the Buddha images. This part features a permanent collection of exquisite Buddha pictures. This is perfect for those who are into Buddhism or who have a keen interest in it. The other segment is towards the east which is a newer building that houses temporary significant displays.

5. Hōryū-Ji Temple

Situated on the way to Todai-ji Temple, the park features pathways for a pleasant stroll around. The designer of the garden implemented the technique of shakkei, which means the scenery is borrowed. The scenery here is the Todai-ji Temple that is introduced into the garden’s backdrop. While here, relax and soak in the peaceful garden environment and the picturesque landscape.

9. Shin-Yakushi-ji

A Buddhist temple established in 747 by Empress Komyo, Shin-Yakushi-ji is located near the Kegon sector in Nara, Japan. The temple was built to pray for the recovering husband of Empress Komyo. Because of several fires the temple has suffered, all that remains of the temple is the main hall that features a seated Yakushi Nyorai, also known as the Medicine Buddha, who is believed to heal the sickly. 12 Shinsho Ritsuzo shrines cover the Buddha statue, known as Twelve Heavenly Generals. There is a local legend that says there was an ogre who had plagued the temple but was later ambushed and expelled. Visitors can check out the large claw marks on the bell which are said to be those of the ogre’s.

10. Manyo Botanical Garden

A sacred forest in Nara, Kasugayama Primeval Forest has been preserved since 841 because of Kasuga Shrine. This means thousands of trees in the forests are over thousands of years old. But, that doesn’t mean nothing has been changed in the forest. The forests are undisturbed and maintained very well with some involvement of the humans. The main mission of the forest has always been to protect the ecological balance and diversity of the forest. One of the fun things to do in the forest includes a forest bath where you fully immerse in the forest–it is actually a well-known practice in Japan that encourages wellness. In the forest, with the help of a guide, you get to immerse yourself in nature, hike for over three to four hours, and learn about the trees, insects, and plants through a magnifying glass.
