The island of Siquijor in the Philippines is packed with surprises. The province, located in the central part of the archipelago, is considered to be the third smallest province in the Philippines. Even though small, Siquijor is a vacationer’s paradise oozing with stunning white sand beaches with turquoise water, incredible reefs, scenic waterfalls, mysterious caves, gorgeous restaurants, and guesthouses, and is comprised of towns with idyllic charm. The Spanish once called this mystical province “Isla del Fuego” (Island of Fire) back in the colonial times, because of the magical glow caused by fireflies at night. Remarkably, this island has become popular, for folk healing and stories about sorcery and witchcraft have added to its mystique. If you’re planning to visit this wonderful destination, here’s a list of the best things to do in Siquijor, Philippines.

Craving an adventure? Then, you’ll definitely want to explore Cantabon Cave, a spacious cave in central Siquijor. The cave’s entrance is simply a small hole in the ground, and once you venture inside, hundreds of stalactites and stalagmites and a pool of fresh water will greet you. For about an hour, you can trek inside, following your local guide as they show you around the cave’s natural beauty.

Though the cave is open daily, it will sometimes close during rainy seasons because of water overflow. Also, it is helpful to note that the guide fee is applicable for up to three people, and if you have more people in the group, you’ll need to pay an additional 100 PHP (1.83 USD) per person. This price already includes a life vest and helmet.

3. Admire the beauty that is Lugnason Falls

This magnificent hidden waterfall is a wall of limestone rocks with water coming from a steam up above, fed by a natural spring that is deep within the mountains of Siquijor. Lugnason Falls was closed for some time because the spring had totally dried up, hence, there were no falls. Locals believe that a shaman blessed the springs and the water came back to life. Locals and fearless tourists would climb up the limestone walls and jump directly in the cool, clear water that is around 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 meters) deep, and which gets deeper in the middle.

The faith of the locals of Siquijor truly runs as deep as their culture and history, and their churches, like the Saint Francis De Assisi Church, have also persevered from the past to the present. This is one of the old famous churches on the island of Siquijor. Located just near the port, the convent was actually built to be a hiding place from the pirates before. Its interior design is simple yet elegant, just like the façade itself. Like most of the old churches on the island, the walls were made of corals and limestone. This church is surely the perfect place to visit for religious travelers.

Located in the barangay of Campalanas in Lazi, this 400-year-old Balete tree is a popular stop on your way to one of the other Siquijor tourist attractions! It is considered to be the oldest and largest Balete tree in the province, and what makes it really mystical is that a natural freshwater spring flows right underneath the tree! The cold and refreshing spring water flow from the tree to the man-made pool where a lot of fish swim around, and if you need a quick foot spa, just dip your feet directly in the water and the fish doctors, as the locals call them, will nibble around your feet for dead skin!

Souvenir shop

If you're already at the Balete Tree, you can buy your souvenirs there. Since Siquijor is known as the capital of mystic activities, they sell a variety of voodoo dolls, amulets, potions and herbal drinks. I bought a looooot of pasalubongs for my friends and family - mostly voodoo doll key chains and fridge magnets. I really had fun looking at the trinkets.
