Ranging from historical and cultural landmarks to kid-friendly museums and galleries to amusement parks and green spaces dotted with play areas, there are innumerable attractions and activities in Delhi that are sure to keep your kids entertained and occupied for hours. Here’s a rundown of the top things to do with kids in Delhi, India.
1. Take a historical tour
To familiarize children with some fascinating Indian history, take a historical tour of the capital city. Delhi has been under the rule of several dynasties, and each left their signatures on the city. Most notably among these are a number of historical monuments, each representing a portion of the city’s intriguing past. Some of the noteworthy sites include Qutub Minar, Humayun Tomb, Lodhi Gardens, Red Fort and India Gate (to name but a few). There’s also a Children’s Park at the India Gate, with plenty of attractions including sculptures, slides and swings, boat rides, musical fountain, and more. Pack a picnic and have lunch there, too.
2. Enjoy a train ride at National Rail Museum
Want to know what trains looked like back in the day, then hop on a toy train at National Rail Museum and learn about the history of Indian railways through interesting exhibits. There are nearly 100 indoor and outdoor exhibits, including models of luxury trains, electric locomotives, royal rail cars, interactive train simulators, and other relics from as far back as the 1800s. Do check out the 1875 Prince of Wales Saloon car.

If you're planning a visit to Nehru Planetarium in New Delhi, I've got a pro tip that will save you time and ensure you don't miss out on the experience. Make sure to pre-book your tickets for the 3-D show. The planetarium has a policy of only allowing the first thirty people in line for each show, and queues can be quite long, especially on weekends. To avoid the hassle, simply use the Bookmyshow app to secure your spot in advance. Not only is it convenient, but the tickets are reasonably priced too.
8. Admire traditional art at National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum
The amazing exhibits at the National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum, commonly referred to as the National Crafts Museum, don’t let the kids get bored, even for an instant. Within the museum, there is a rural village set up where children can learn about India’s traditional arts through eye-catching displays and sculptures. There is an impressive collection of jewelry, pottery, textiles, terracotta sculptures, murals, metalwork, and even sarees and fabrics. There’s also a demonstration section, where visitors can watch 50 artisans at work. You can even buy some Indian craft items at discounted prices here. Besides, there are four open-air theaters, where cultural performances from different parts of the country are held.

If you would like to give your kids a break from historical and cultural institutions, then Deer Park in Hauz Khas Village is where you should be taking them. Not only is the park a refreshing getaway from the city’s urban decor, but it is also home to some fascinating creatures including rabbits, guinea pigs, peacocks, and of course, deer. Besides, kids can also play on the grassy lawns surrounded by lush trees.

The best time to visit Deer Park would be early in the morning or late in the evening when the weather is more pleasant, especially during the summer months in Delhi. During these times, you're unlikely to encounter much of a crowd, which would allow you to enjoy peaceful strolls and the ambiance. Nearby this park, you'll also find Hauz Khas Fort, a historical landmark worth exploring. Once again, the best time to visit this attraction would be in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Another museum to visit is the Museum of Illusions! This unique museum offers an immersive and interactive experience, blending art, science, and psychology to create mind-bending illusions and optical wonders. Throughout the museum, there are numerous interactive exhibits and mind games. The illusions will appeal to both kids and adults. The museum tour lasts one hour and is paid activity. My favorite was the ‘Vortex Tunnel’.
The staff at the museum were friendly and helpful, and they eagerly snapped pictures for everyone. We visited on a Sunday and the place was extremely crowded. Many were denied entry. Thankfully I had pre-booked our tickets! So my tip to anyone visiting the museum: book your tickets online in advance.
