The countries in the Balkans not only offer plenty of unknown and adventurous sights, but also long beautiful coastlines for leisure trips and more relaxed European travel experiences. Besides the famous Croatia, Montenegro also offers plenty of stunning seasides for visitors at a more affordable price range. Below are four of the top must-see destinations within the country:

Kotor - the hiking destination of Montenegro with the little ‘Great Wall’

Adventurous travelers into hiking and who love adoring natural landscapes of gorgeous mountains should definitely put Kotor on their list. From the walls surrounding the old town you will get some picturesque views of Boka Kotorska (Bay of Kota). Get up early before 8 AM to climb the upper town walls when there are not yet too many tourists around and the entrance is free (normally 3 EUR or 3.4 USD). This track is also known as the little ‘Great Wall’ of Montenegro. Spare one day to leave the old city and hike through the Krstac (a mountain) for about 4 hours in total there and back. Passing by Kotor must include an experience of staying in the Old Town Hostel with its ancient interior designs and unique antique furniture.

Budva - the mini Dubrovnik

The UNESCO Heritage Site in Montenegro that was at the top of my favourite towns in the country is Budva. Surrounded by an ancient fortress and located by the bay, Budva is an excellent combination of several splendid beaches, interesting sights and vibrant nightlife. The city’s symbol is the Dancing Girl Statue, lying on a rock above the ocean in front of a dazzling panoramic view of the town. Budva is without doubt the picture-perfect land that people have always imagined about Montenegro. A highly-recommended accommodation is the Freedom Hostel.

Sveti Stefan - the place of seaside resorts

Located not very far away from Budva, about 20 minutes by bus, Sveti Stefan is another seaside paradise with luxury hotels and resorts right next to stunning beaches with white sand and pure blue water. Note that some parts of the beaches can be forbidden for non-resort guests, but you can always stroll to the fort nearby to get a stunning view of the tiny island in the middle of the town, connected with a small path.

Podgorica - the green capital

For those who are more of a city-type of traveler, do not miss out on the capital city of Podgorica. If you are coming to Montenegro from other countries by bus, I recommend going through here because there are many cheap bus connections throughout the country. Podgorica is a different and newer-looking city than the others, known for several modern attractions such as the Millennium Bridge and the Hercegovačka pedestrian street with abundant bars and restaurants to chill out at. You can see many people there even during the early afternoons. There’s also an old town near the city center and St. George’s Church, which is in a park. Walking past the church, you will reach Gorica Hill, where you can get a stunning panoramic picture of the city. A highly-recommended low-budget accommodation is Montenegro Hostel Podgorica.

Traveling within Montenegro

Getting around Montenegro is convenient and affordable by bus. You can check the bus schedule online at BusTicket4. Tickets can be purchased at the station for the same date of departure for about the same price as from the site. There’s no need to book in advance if you travel off season (outside the summer months of between June and August). Roads in Montenegro could possibly go under construction without any prior announcement so you should not take a night bus or try to go to the airport in a hurry.
