It may not be among the first places that travelers think about when they want to explore Germany, but the city of Heidelberg really should be. Home to the country’s oldest university, Heidelberg was spared from air bombings during the Second World War, thus managing to retain much of its centuries-old charm, with narrow streets, baroque-style buildings and medieval castles.
Situated along Neckar River, a tributary to the mighty Rhine River, the city is about an hour’s drive south of the Frankfurt International Airport and is a great choice for a few days’ stay before you continue towards major German cities like Berlin up north or Munich down south. Be sure to check out the things to do and the top day trips in the city. Here are the best Airbnbs in Heidelberg.

9. Convenient guestroom in central location
Travelers of the bookish sort will adore this guestroom, which has a big shelf of books for you to peruse. Don’t worry, there is ample space in the room for two and a double bed, coffee table with chairs and a wardrobe. The hosts are kind enough to provide a map of the neighborhood, which is centrally located and just minutes away from the main train station.
Just a couple of drawbacks: you will have to climb about 60 steps to the guestroom and you will hear the trams trundle by right outside the building. Even so, this Heidelberg accommodation near the train station is one of the best in the area!

10. Small but quirky accommodation
This is a tiny place to stay in Heidelberg. You’ll need to climb up a ladder to reach the single bed, which is installed into the room’s roof. But don’t let the small size deter you, this is nevertheless a clean and comfortable accommodation on the northern edge of the city. You will share the apartment with the host, her family and their lovely pet cat Lummel. It takes about a 10-minute tram ride to the city center, or you can rent a bicycle for 10 EUR per day, which should be ideal to explore the small city.

11. Room for three in southernmost neighborhood
Most of Heidelberg’s attractions lie in the old city center along the Neckar River but, like most German cities, they can be easily reached from any neighborhood via public transportation. This double bedroom for three with private bathroom is located in the southern district of Rohrbach, which is about a 15-minute tram ride from the city’s attractions.
There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and convenience shops around the tram station, making this a splendid option to stay for a few days. Bonus: you’ll also have the company of the host’s family and two cats.

12. Studio apartment in great location
For those craving a super-convenient accommodation close to every attraction, look no further than this studio apartment, right in the middle of Heidelberg. Just one street away from the north bank of the Neckar River, this two-room apartment is located on the ground floor of an art-nouveau-style building and has an enchanting courtyard garden for you to relax in.
It is flanked by the Heidelberg University in the west and the Philosophers’ Walk in the east. Cross the bridge to the other side of the river and the old city center and castle are right around the corner. A fantastic rental choice for your sightseeing convenience.
