From the Singapore Food Festival to Deepavali, and Singapore Art Week to free music performances at the Esplanade … it really doesn’t matter, Singapore knows how to keep you busy. If you’ve only got a short time and you’re looking for the perfect place to stay in Singapore, Hotel 1929 is definitely worth checking out. This boutique hotel is perfectly located near Chinatown, close to both Outram Park and Chinatown MRT stations, and in the heart of all the hip and cool establishments in traditional shophouses.

Arriving at Hotel 1929

Hotel 1929 is extremely accessible via public transport, which is great for those wanting to explore the city. If you take the MRT, you can either get off at Chinatown or Outram Park MRT Station. From Outram Park (purple/green line) the hotel is a 10 minute walk from the station. The walk is only 5 minutes from Chinatown (purple/blue line). Take Exit A, after exiting the station, turn left and walk past Smith Street until you see the sign for Keong Saik Road. Additionally, there are many buses (no. 2,12,33,54) that stop at People’s Park or Chinatown Complex. Otherwise, you can always take one of the affordable and plentiful taxis. Conveniently located along the fringe of Chinatown, Hotel 1929 is only a 5 minute taxi ride from the heart of the Central Business District (CBD) and is in the heart of the vibrant Keong Saik Road.

Hotel 1929: Bold. Stylish. Quality service.

It is no secret that Singapore has many top hotels; there is the iconic Marina Bay Sands or the historic Raffles Hotel. While those hotels are great, why not try something unique and cosy?

Hotel 1929 consists of five shophouses built in 1929, and is a part of Unlisted Collection, which is a selective brand of high-quality boutique hotels in major cities across the globe. Unlisted Collection’s hotels are all set in historical buildings that have been carefully restored and renovated into memorable and unique hotels.

The exterior of Hotel 1929 is Instagram-worthy; they’ve maintained the shophouse architecture with crisp white paint that looks stunning against the blue Singapore sky. When you walk inside, you’ll find a bright and modern lobby with retro vintage furniture. You can relax in one of the stylish chairs, flip through magazines and people-watch through the large windows.

Upon arrival, the friendly reception staff warmly welcomed me and my travel companion. They offer you a welcome drink and ask you to take a seat and relax during the check-in process. Thanks to a speedy and efficient check-in, we received the key to our room in a matter of minutes. The receptionist even escorted us to the elevator, informing us of some happening events we shouldn’t miss during our stay.

Breakfast is optional and can be selected when you make your booking. I would definitely recommend making your booking with breakfast included. The Ember Restaurant served a simple and hearty breakfast. I had banana pancakes but there are other American-style breakfasts that looked delicious, too. Breakfast is available from 7:30 am until 10 am every morning.

If you want a quiet minute to soak in the sun before your day of exploring Singapore, check out the patio on the second floor. You can relax, have a chat, or read on one of their comfy sofas.

Simple and stylish boutique hotel

Things can’t go wrong when you have a stylish room with a window facing Keong Saik Road. Each room at Hotel 1929 has a different design, with touches of warm colors and playful furniture. I stayed in their deluxe room, which is simple and modern. It has a super comfortable queen bed (I had a little problem leaving the bed the next morning because it was too comfortable), and stylish furniture. In-room amenities include complimentary Wi-Fi, unlimited local phone calls, a hairdryer, LCD TV, deposit box, and an electric tea kettle with a selection of teas and coffee. For those of you who love a good beauty regimen, you’d be delighted to know that Hotel 1929 provides Kiehl’s toiletries in their suites!

What to do around Hotel 1929

Hotel 1929’s great location is perhaps what makes it different from other hotels. It is only a few steps away from the bustling Chinatown, where you will get to explore temples, traditional shops, markets and most importantly, food.

While Singapore offers a wide variety of activities and places to explore, Chinatown is always a favorite. There’s something about the color, architectural style, Chinese culture and food that truly excites any visitor’s curiosity.

If you’re on a business trip and you can only manage to do one cultural thing, you’ll have to wander around Chinatown and make your way to the bay.

If you are looking for some delicious restaurant options, I have several to recommend. First up, Potato Head Folk. The Saik Daiquiri at Potato Head Folk is one of their famous cocktails that combines rum with fresh lime, yuzu, and cane sugar.

If you are a Mexican food lover, Muchachos, located conveniently near the hotel, has a great burrito bowl that comes with a large dollop of fresh guacamole.

For local food, head down to Smith Street, where you’ll find two tasty restaurants. Order siew mai and har gao at Tak Po Dimsum. Or, visit Chinatown Heritage Centre for chicken rice (one of the national dishes of Singapore) at the famous Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice.

Walk off everything you’ve eaten by making your way down to the bay where you will get to see a gorgeous view of the CBD. I highly recommend having a drink at a rooftop bar for an unparalleled view of the city. Either visit 1 Altitude at Raffles, Lantern Bar at the Fullerton or, just to tick it off the bucket list, Ce La Vie at Marina Bay Sands.

Impressive boutique hotel, you won't want to leave!

Perfect for both business and leisure travel, Hotel 1929, located on Keong Saik Road near the heart of Chinatown gives you more than just excellent service. Their creative concept designs leave you inspired while its comfortable rooms give you an amazing night’s rest.
