Baku is a favorite place for tourists visiting Azerbaijan. Aside from being the capital of the country and its major metropolitan and commercial center, it also allows easy access to some lovely beaches by the Caspian Sea. Each of these beaches, located on the Absheron Peninsula, differs in ambiance, type of sand and water, and the kind of tourists it attracts. Infrastructure and prices also vary from one beach to another. You can spend time on Amburan Beach if you’re interested in a luxurious holiday, while Shikhov Beach is ideal for long walks on the sand and swimming sessions in clear waters.

To help you decide which beach to visit, I, a resident of the area, have prepared a selection for you. Find out what interests you the most, consider your budget and time constraints, and pick the most suitable option. No matter which season you choose to visit Baku in, you can find solace in one of these beautiful beaches near Baku, Azerbaijan.

1. Shikhov Beach

On the southern coast of the village of Shikhov, you can find one of my favorite beaches - Shikhov Beach. This beach is considered one of the cleanest in the country. In addition, the area is well-equipped and you can find many attractions, cafes, and bars here. If you like energetic activities as much as I do, you can make use of the tennis court and sports grounds, as well as exercise equipment.

Unfortunately, it is not always possible to find a free ball to play with, so my friends and I always carry our own. Alternatively, you can also rent a scooter to explore the area. These types of entertainment cost us only 5 AZN (2.94 USD) per person, which is very cheap. If you come to the paid area of the beach, it will cost you an entry fee of 10 AZN (5.88 USD), which will include access to changing rooms, sunbeds, showers, towels, a water park, and a lot of other facilities.

In the hottest season, the water on Shikhov Beach warms up to 26-28°C (78.8-82.4°F). I often come here in June or July when the water warms up perfectly. All my visits to this beach have been free of cost. You can find cozy gazebos, tables, umbrellas, and deck chairs for relaxing. I love to lie on a sun lounger right by the sea and read my favorite book in peace; however, be prepared for the beach to be noisy at certain hours. Families prefer to visit the beach from 5 pm to 8 pm, while in the morning, it is very calm here. Watch out for the scorching heat of the sun from 1 pm to 4 pm and be sure to settle under umbrellas if you visit the beach during this period.

The beach is located very close to Baku, only about 10 km (6.21 mi) away, so feel free to take a car and drive to this place at any time convenient for you. I prefer to take a taxi and usually, it costs me 10-15 AZN (5.88 - 8.82 USD) for a half-an-hour journey. If you want to travel by public transport, then take bus number 125 at the stop of the Bailov stadium and within 40 minutes, you will be at the beach. Lastly, after reaching the beach, do not forget to try the fresh seafood available there - you won’t regret it! My favorite is the local salmon kebab.

2. Bilgah Beach

Bilgah Beach is a favorite place for both young groups and families visiting Baku. The beach is located opposite the Nardaran pier and is also called the ‘sea of summer residents’. On the warmest days and hours, it is quite crowded, but if you come here in September, you will find plenty of free space.

It is convenient to get to the beach both by taxi and by public transport. From the Koroghlu metro station, take bus number 60, travel to Xalil Rza Uluturk Street (ASAN Xidmet), and transfer to bus number 171. After 26 stops and an hour, you will be at the beach. In case you avail of a taxi, the whole trip will take you just 40 minutes and cost you 13 AZN (7.65 USD).

In general, the part called the ‘sea of summer residents’ is ideal for those who love to stay active and enjoy sports. You can come across experienced swimmers here since the entrance to the sea is sharp and the depth of the water is significant. In addition, there are a lot of waves in this part, and you can have a great time splashing about in the water. This section of the beach is free to visit but is not equipped at all, so remember to carry everything you need with you.

If you prefer a calmer and more relaxing holiday, then you should consider the part of the beach near the cardiology sanatorium. Here, you can find shallow, calm, and shimmering water, warm enough for comfortable swims. In addition, there are rescue booths with constant supervision. Ideal for families with children, this part of the beach is also quite safe to enjoy. The coast here is covered with soft, fine sand, which is pleasant both to walk or sunbathe on.

Beach resorts near Baku, Azerbaijan

Sea Breeze Resort

Sea Breeze Resort, located in the suburb of Nardaran, 32.5 km (20.19 mi) north of Baku, is a trendy place with well-developed infrastructure. I advise you to take a taxi to reach this resort since I once tried to avail of public transport and realized that the route to this place is not very developed. Plus, a taxi ride will cost you only about 15-20 AZN (8.82 - 12.4 USD), and you can travel from the city center to the resort in 40 minutes. On the other hand, if you go for public transport, three transfers and half an hour of walking will be in store for you!

The resort includes access to the golden-sand beach and the sea, an outdoor pool, sports courts, and a large selection of cafes and restaurants where you can order various drinks, pizza, barbecues, French fries, and much more. The entry fee is only 20 AZN (12.4 USD). At the entrance, I was provided with a towel and access to a locker. I was also allowed to use a sun lounger by the sea, swim in the pool, and freshen up under the shower.

Do remember that outside food is prohibited here. Therefore, if you have some snacks on you, you can leave them at the entrance and later pick them up at the exit.

Amburan Beach is located 41.1 km (25.54 mi) north of Baku in the village of Bilgah. It is a favorite place for locals and tourists alike, from young partygoers to families with small children. I prefer to reach this destination quickly by taxi as most of the local taxi drivers know the place very well. By taxi, you can get here from Baku city center (Nizami street), and it will cost you about 15-20 AZN (8.82-11.76). If you want to travel by bus, it will take you 40 minutes from the Koroghlu metro station by bus number 171, and 15 minutes on foot after you get off.

Amburan Beach Club is a huge complex that includes all kinds of entertainment - cafes and restaurants right on the seashore, a karaoke room, a bar, and more! There is also a water park, water games for children, opportunities for diving and surfing, and a mini-golf court to keep you busy. Children love to have fun in the water park’s pool with water slides, while my friends and I, like most young people, love to swim in the sea and relish delicious fresh food. In the cafes and restaurants, you can find both national and European food, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee with some cake. It is worth knowing that the prices in the establishments here are slightly higher than in the center of Baku. In general, this is a paradise for visitors of all ages and preferences.

In the summer, there are additional activities held here - concerts, festivals, parties, broadcasts of games and other world events, and master classes for both adults and children. If your little ones are bored, you can use the services of animators, who, as I have seen, entertain children of all ages with great pleasure.

Some of the above-mentioned attractions at Amburan Beach Club do not affect the fixed amount of the entrance fee. This means that if you pay the entry fee, you will automatically have access to certain features, such as the pool, sun lounger, and shower, and later decide if you want to buy additional features. Prices vary depending on the day of the week. On Mondays, you can enter the complex for only 16 AZN (9.41 USD), and from Tuesday to Thursday you will be charged 18 AZN (10.59 USD). On Fridays, the price of the ticket will be 20 AZN (11.76 USD), and on weekends - 25 AZN (14.71 USD).
