Basecamp Boulder is just a 30-minute drive from Bear Peak, which makes a pretty difficult hike. When you get there, you can either park at the NCAR parking lot and go up Fern Canyon to the peak or park in the neighborhood on Cragmoor Street (just off of Lehigh on the way to NCAR). Bring water, snacks, a hat, SPF, and good shoes. Also wear clothes you can move comfortably in. It gets windy and cold at the peak, so bring a windbreaker or jacket too.
From the Cragmoor Trailhead, it took about 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach the top. Be prepared for lots of rocks and some scrambling. It’s a steady and continuous ascent, and the trail starts to get narrower in the forest. The last push to reach the absolute peak is definitely tough but worth it for the 360 views at the top.
