A Local's Guide To Mall Olympic Garden (MOG), Malang's Largest Shopping Mall

The number of contemporary shops inside Mall Olympic Garden (MOG) quickly surpasses that of other previously well-known Malang shopping malls, such as Matos. So, it’s no wonder that MOG has become the largest shopping mall in Malang.

Its direct connection to Gajayana football stadium, the first and oldest football stadium in Indonesia, puts MOG in an even more advantageous location. It’s well connected to public transpote routs. Whenever I board a Malang bus and stop at Indomaret Banjarum a.k.a. Karanglo or Alfamart Kendedes, the Grab app always shows me a cost of only around 20,000 IDR (approximately 1.23 USD) to go to MOG’s main entrance.

You can expect everything to be colorful in MOG’s fashion stores. Authentic Malang eateries can also be found everywhere here. You can even enjoy ready-to-eat meals and local snacks in Central Market’s supermarket area!

Where to eat and drink

Malang is well-known for its wide selection of local home-cooked foods, such as soup-based dishes including bakso or rawon.

You can enjoy these same delicacies at MOG’s food court and Kantin MOG (the staff’s canteen). Additionally, MOG also offers a variety of contemporary food and beverages that are authentically from Malang. Reading this list will provide you with some of the most recommended food and beverage selections at MOG!

1. Piata

Have you ever missed the joy of cooking and mixing in the process of making ramyeon, which you would later enjoy eating? Piata by MOG can fulfill your needs!

The cooking space only has halal ramyeon options, so you don’t have to worry about the presence of pork or lard. You can also purchase extra toppings such as seaweed and oden to mix and match with your cooked ramyeon.

In addition, you can also buy their delicious snacks, crackers, and other oleh-oleh products. I like that Piata is not just about colorful designs but is also a place dedicated to bringing together the cultural elements of K-pop and Malang culinary oleh-oleh (gift) in one place!

2. Kanzo Suki & Grill

True to its name, Kanzo Suki & Grill offers a unique self-cooking experience like that found in hot pot and BBQ restaurants.

Firstly, you need to select your ingredients from the refrigerator. You have 90 minutes to prepare and enjoy your meal at the table. Afterward, you can choose to cook the food in the hot pot or grill the meat using the provided barbeque tools.

Be prepared to spend approximately 100,000 IDR - 150,000 IDR (6.16-9.24 USD) for one session at Kanzo Suki & Grill. Keep in mind that some dishes in the refrigerator are only available for a la carte ordering.

3. Central Market

Central Market’s supermarket area on the 2nd floor, near the main entrance, is my favorite because it introduces visitors to Malang’s snack oleh-oleh products and packed ready-to-eat meals.

Keripik tempe and various types of jajan pasar (sweet and savory Indonesian street snacks) are the first things you will see when you step inside the supermarket. Each week or so, the supermarket presents different SMEs for the jajan (Indonesian word for snacks) products. Another thing I love about the jajan corner is the separate stalls for sweet snacks and savory ones.

Their packed ready-to-eat mixed rice and satay products are also appetizing! Generally, one dish here costs around 15,000 IDR - 20,000 IDR (0.92 USD - 1.23 USD).

4. Gelatea Ice Gelato & Tea

I prefer gelato over the usual ice cream products, even though I love both. When I traveled to Malang, I wondered if I could combine iced tea, one of the most popular beverages in Indonesia (including in Malang), with gelato.

Thankfully, Central Market has the answer to my cravings. I saw Gelatea Ice Gelato & Tea inside the Central Market area. True to their name, their flagship product is a scoop of gelato of your chosen flavor inside a sweetened iced tea.

I usually budget around 15,000 IDR (0.92 USD) to buy their most popular product!

5. Food court

Malang is known for its love of home-cooked meals, warm-served contemporary foods, and noodle dishes, and the food court at MOG is no exception. Waroeng Batok offers unique fried rice shaped as Angry Birds for kids, as well as local soup dishes such as rawon or soto.

Fat Panda is a prime example of Malang’s penchant for all things large. Their chicken and beef steaks are juicy and they even have the option to mix the large fried chicken and beef steaks in a hotplate with noodles and an egg.

As someone who greatly enjoys contemporary Japanese cuisine, trying out Japanese bento and taiyaki ice creams made in Malang’s own style is always on my bucket list!

And for selfie lovers, there’s an added bonus: you can take photos inside the food court’s giant cage!

6. Sweet Mocikuu and Doux Treat

The large diameters and chewy fillings make MOG’s Sweet Mocikuu different from your original mochi products. They offer mochi products with strawberry fillings that look fresh and delicious! Their chocolate mochi also looks tempting. If only I could buy a portable cooler to keep the taste!

On the other hand, Doux Treat sells Portuguese tarts and chocolate bomboloni donuts crafted in an authentic Malang style. They use halal rum for their rum variations. I suggest you buy six with mixed flavors—that way, you can try different tart flavors and get the box. Otherwise, prepare your food carrier for individual purchases.

7. Pondok Desa

Pondok Desa serves Indonesian barbeque foods in a place that evokes a cozy atmosphere with its wooden blocks and bare bamboo trees in a dimly lit village.

Their grilled seafood dishes are always served fresh and accompanied by a variety of delicious sambal dips! I recommend making a reservation at this restaurant during holidays and peak seasons, as they are frequently fully booked for last-minute dining.

8. Kantin MOG

I think Kantin MOG’s location is both aesthetic and strategic. It is strategic because it is the first building you see before entering the shopping mall. It is also aesthetic because the stairs surrounding the main canteen building are made of natural stones.

Many employees love eating here—that’s how it was nicknamed “the staff’s canteen.”

How to order? Go directly to the outlet you want to and pay in cash before they prepare your meal!

Where to shop

Stores that sell clothes, shoes, and accessories are something we always see in shopping malls. When it comes to MOG, “colorful” and “youthful” are two defining characteristics of the styles in their stores.

Dear Sisters and Miel are my favorites. Not only are their fashion collections colorful, but their price ranges generally don’t exceed 200,000 IDR (12.35 USD).

Keep reading, and you will discover other great shopping spots in MOG!

9. Toko Kawaii Malang Olympic Garden, Julian Potts, and Lenka

Besides selling cute accessories for teenage girls, Toko Kawaii Malang Olympic Garden is well-known for its extensive collection of gigantic soft plushies. This sets it apart from other branches in different cities. Just take a look at the giant rabbits—they are not only adorable but also irresistible!

Meanwhile, Lenka focuses on a Korean vibe, so your accessories will complement each other when you purchase from both of these stores!

As for Julian Potts, they not only sell adorable hair accessories, but their tote bags also have an environmentally friendly and aesthetic look. I love their pastel-colored accessories.

10. Topstar Accessories

Have you ever considered enhancing the appearance of your phone while exploring the Malang area? If so, you should definitely check out Topstar!

Phone cases are Topstar’s specialty. I was truly impressed when I explored the various phone case options available at MOG’s Topstar. They not only offer solid RGB-colored phone cases, but also stylish and sturdy cases adorned with beautiful glitter designs.

As Topstar is known for being a retailer of phone accessories, you might also want to see if they have the USB cables or chargers you need during your trip to Malang!

11. Dear Sisters and Miel

I’ve always been attracted to chic fashion styles since my childhood! That’s why I love strolling around chic clothing stores that sell Korean-style clothes such as Dear Sisters or Miel.

Based on my experience, the pricing ranges of chic clothes are not affordable for everyone. Sometimes, their prices might exceed the monthly wages of an average worker. However, these three MOG stores surprise me with their affordable price ranges. Some stores even offer free membership if you spend more than 150,000 IDR (9.22 USD).

12. Undefeated

Undefeated store not only emphasizes the luxurious feel through bold and glittering typography for their brand name, but they also demonstrate to visitors that they take excellent care of their shoes by double-wrapping them.

You can be certain that the shoes they sell are authentic! That’s why I would say budgeting around 1,000,000 to 3,000,000 IDR (or 61.73-185.19 USD) is essential for your visit to MOG’s Undefeated store.

Other highlights

MOG experiences can be so enjoyable that you will find yourself comfortably spending hours inside the shopping mall.

Did you know that you can also engage in other modern and entertaining activities at Malang’s largest shopping mall? For example, you can take photos with the giant ant colonies and crocodiles located in front of the Amazone game center.

Keep scrolling to discover more ideas for additional activities at MOG!

13. Take a selfie with monstrous ant colonies and the mock crocodile at Amazone

“Welcome to the bug kingdom” could very well be the silent greeting offered by the monstrous-looking insect colonies and reptiles when you step into the interactive and immersive Amazon game center on the highest floor of MOG.

The ant colonies give visitors an evil glare with their malicious red eyes, as if challenging them to a one-on-one battle. As you take a few steps inside, you will come face-to-face with the crocodile, also known as the gate’s guardian. Together, they create harmonies that invoke the visitors’ desire to find the light of hope.

Fortunately, none of them are moving, so you can freely take selfies with them without any worries!

14. Watch little ones play with motion sands before heading to the food court

If you are traveling with children, you might want to visit the motion sand zone on the same floor level as MOG’s food court. Although parents are not allowed to enter the zone due to the fence, they can still observe their children and watch them interact with the tools, as the fences are as tall as a toddler’s feet.

Ideally, kids should spend around 30 minutes to one hour playing in the motion sand area. After they are done playing, heading to the food court and getting some kid-friendly meals should be your next plan!

15. Care for your hair at The Guh Wijaya Negara or Jonathan

So far, Jonathan is the only hair salon in MOG that uses Kerastase. It also has seats fashioned like toy cars as replacements for the usual chairs for kids.

Meanwhile, the uniqueness of The Guh Wijaya Negara lies in its interior design. Their cursive typography for their brand’s name and cutesy house-like decor blend well.

Expect to budget around 100,000 IDR (6.14 USD) for one session of hair makeover or any type of hair treatment at these two hair salons!

Make the most of your time in MOG

It’s no surprise that visitors and locals have shifted their attention to Malang’s MOG over the past few years. MOG has it all: a dedication to presenting the best local foods and street snacks, a strategic location, and a willingness to offer contemporary activities for all ages. MOG’s ant colonies, the lovely hair salon, and the interactive motion sands for kids are just a few other things that make MOG even more attractive.

So, when you’re in Malang, visit MOG for an incredible time by yourself or with your loved ones.
