When you think of beaches, does Japan come to mind as one of the places to go to for a beach holiday? You would be surprised because Japan astonishingly does have some lovely seaside escapades. Many of the popular ones are located in Okinawa Prefecture, which is several miles off the main island of Japan. That might seem too far away especially if you just need a quick beach fix from the city. If that’s the case, it would be best to put Tokyo as your jump-off point to these beaches. Perfectly situated on a bay, Tokyo offers several of these beaches within close proximity. Many of these beaches are only a few hours away from Tokyo’s main metropolitan and are great for a seaside weekend away. 1. Kominato Beach, Chichijima, Ogasawara

Though not exactly located on the mainland of Japan, Kominato Beach is still considered a part of Tokyo. It’s one of the beautiful best-kept beaches on the island of Chichijima. There aren’t many attractions and obstructions on the beach, just pure nature surrounding you. It’s like having your own private beach. The sands are pristine white and it leads to glistening blue waters which are free from corals and scraps of seaweed so you will feel more comfortable to swim. At night, you will be treated to front row seats of the constellations and sometimes the Milky Way even shows up for the lucky ones.

2. Southern Beach, Chigasaki

Say “aloha” when you visit Southern Beach in Chigasaki, Japan’s little taste of Hawaii. There’s a lot of Hawaiian influence at the beach. The atmosphere is laid back and chill, and many of the activities are patterned after Hawaii. The highlight of them all is the surfing culture, which has become a popular activity on the beach. 3. Odaiba Beach, Tokyo

Odaiba Beach sits on a manmade piece of land just off the coast of mainland Tokyo. Today, it is most famous for its various shopping centers and entertainment scene but originally, it was meant to be a group of forts built to defend the city. When at Odaiba Beach, you will find yourself thinking you’re in a mini version of Manhattan Island in New York. There’s a small-scale version of the iconic Statue of Liberty against the backdrop of Rainbow Bridge, which is bears resemblance to the equally famous Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. You shouldn’t miss sunset when the sky starts to glow against the silhouette of these structures for a picturesque moment. 4. Shirahama Beach, Shimoda

Several miles south of Tokyo lies the Izu peninsula. It’s one of the top weekend destinations for those coming from Tokyo as the area is very accessible from the city by train. Izu peninsula is known to be a hotspot for resorts and beach getaways because of its natural scenery. One of the amazing beaches here is Shirahama Beach, located near the tip of the peninsula. It’s a large stretch of white sand at 800 meters (2,2624 feet) and is one of the more popular beaches in the area. Shirahama is known for its surfing and swimming activities and also hosts the Shirahama Jinja, a beautiful Shinto shrine.

Located in the Kanagawa Prefecture, Shichirigahama is a lovely beach stretching from Koyurigimisaki Cape to Inamuragasaki Cape. Unlike many of the other beaches on this list, Shichirigahama is not exactly known for swimming. Although there is a season when the surfers head over to the area, the beach is more known to be a hotspot to chill and hangout. You can enjoy the spectacular view that includes Mt. Fuji and Enoshima Island to the west. The coastal town also nearby offers a lot of amazing restaurants to check out. Then when the sun is about to set, head out to the coast and don’t miss out.

6. Hasaki Beach, Kamisu

Hasaki Beach is another popular beach a few hours from Tokyo. The beach itself is vast and is actually split into two areas - one for swimming and another one for water sports and activities. A lot of people also come to Hasaki Beach with their mats, umbrellas, and foldable chairs to lounge on the fine sand. The waters are clean and clear which makes a great spot for swimming. The beach also conveniently has a parking lot right at the premises so it won’t be difficult for you to access.

Another great beach on the Izu Peninsula is Tatadohama Beach. Located near the southern tip of the peninsula, Tatadohama Beach is a sight to see. It’s one of those beaches you typically dream of with fine sand, crashing waves, swaying trees, and rock formations. Though the sand isn’t white, it’s clean and it heads out to meet the warm waters of the sea. A lot of people come to Tatadohama Beach to swim, relax, and enjoy the beautiful view. It’s also another popular hotspot for surfing.

8. Yuigahama Beach, Yuigahama City

One of the many beaches sitting on the coast of Sagami Bay is Yuigahama Beach in Kamakura, which is a few hours away from Tokyo. It’s a great option for a quick beach getaway, especially if you don’t really plan on swimming but would just like to take a breather. A lot of people choose to take a walk on the wide beach. However, if you do wish to swim, there is a lifeguard on duty from 9am to 5pm so you don’t have to worry so much about safety while swimming. Watch out for occasional events held on the beach like the Umi-no-ie, an open-air market held during the summer.

9. Isshiki Beach, Hayama

Located in Hayama, a lovely seaside town in the Miura District, Isshiki Beach is ironically a popular tourist beach even though public transportation is limited. To reach the place, you have to get a train to nearby town of Zushi and from there take a bus to Isshiki Beach. However, that doesn’t stop the crowds from flocking to Isshiki Beach, especially during the summer. The vibe on the beach is vibrant and relaxed, attracting many of the young people. Students particularly come here to spend their summer break and hang out with their friends. You shouldn’t miss the most popular beach house here which is Blue Moon–they offer great food, drinks, and music, plus they even have a spa.

10. Onjuku Beach, Isumi City

Just two hours from Tokyo by train, Onjuku Beach is a popular beach in the area of Chiba Prefecture. Because of the golden sandy beaches and ever-so-changing waves, the beach has become a frequent hangout for many locals and tourists alike. The most popular activity here is surfing and there are even places on the beach giving lessons. There are also several restaurants nearby so you won’t worry about getting hungry. Don’t miss the nearby water park and pool as well if you’re unsure of swimming in the sea.

11. Kugenuma Beach, Fujisawa

One of the closer beaches to Tokyo is Kugenuma Beach in Kanagawa Prefecture. Sitting on the shores of Sagami Bay, Kugenuma Beach boasts a chill and relaxed atmosphere. It is very popular with young people especially during the summer months. Scenes of beach huts, lifeguards, surfers, volleyball players, and crowds are especially abundant during the months of June through August. There are also areas for barbecue grilling and sunbathing. If you walk a little down towards the main road, Route 134, there are more restaurants and attractions like Enoshima Aquarium.

At the very tip of Izu Peninsula, you will find a little hidden paradise in the form of Hirizo Beach. It’s a distinct beach from several others because it can only be reached by boat. Hirizo Beach is most famous for snorkeling due to the clear waters and abundant marine life. There are also several activities you can do while on the beach such as playing sports, lounging, or having a picnic. Be sure to bring your own things such as mats, towels, tents, umbrellas, food, and other necessary things you will need on the beach and that you can carry on the boat. Also remember that there are no toilets on the beach so best to prepare yourself for that as well.

16. Sun Beach, Oarai, Ibaraki

Up north from Tokyo, head up over to the Kanto area to find Sun Beach Oarai. It’s the biggest beach in the area and is famous among many tourists and locals alike. The waves here are particularly not as wild as other beaches and the shore is quite shallow so it’s an ideal swimming spot, especially for children. The beach was also made to be wheelchair-accessible and offers a lot of restrooms with showers. Because of its all-around accessibility, Sun Beach Oarai hosts a number of sporting and recreational events as well.

Don’t miss the white torii gate out by the shoreline which marks the Ubara Yasaka Shrine, a beautiful piece right where the sand meets the sea.

18. Akiya Beach, Yokosuka

One of the popular beaches along the coast of Tateishi in Yokosuka is Akiya Beach. The beach is conveniently located near Route 134 and offers a lot of parking space for guests. The vast sandy beach offers a lot of room for you to relax, either alone or with friends. You can either sit on a rock and simply listen to the waves crash on the shore or lay back on the sand with your friends and some chill music and good food. If you’re lucky enough to be blessed with clear skies, you’ll even catch a good view of the spectacular Mt. Fuji while lying on the beach. It can’t get any better than that!

19. Ajigaura Beach, Hitachinaka

Stretching 1.5 kilometers (0.9 mile), Ajigaura Beach is a calm beach with beautiful golden sands and playful waves crashing on the rocks. It’s not exactly ideal for swimming due to the big waves that come into shore but the beach itself is a nice place to relax and have some alone time. If you want to get away from the city, this is the beach for you. It’s even easier to reach because of its accessibility by train on the Hitachinaka seaside railway or by bus from the JR Katsuta station. Hitachi Seaside Park nearby serves as its landmark and there’s a shopping center to check out nearby as well.
