Located in my hometown of Ranchi, Birsa Munda Airport has witnessed many of my forays into the great outdoors. Although it’s small, I’ve never found it to be congested the way airports in bigger cities might be, which is a huge plus if you’re trying to get a calm start to your journey. However, its limited size does mean you won’t find many eating or shopping outlets inside—just a snack store or two offering simple items and a couple of gift and book shops.
While you’re in Ranchi, do check out The Reef Rooftop Restaurant for one of my favorite views of the city and great food. For retail therapy, my go-to spots are Nucleus Mall and JD Hi Street Mall.

1. Capitol Hill (from USD 50)
One of my favorite places to visit when I need a breather or good food, Capitol Hill is a beloved landmark in Ranchi. It’s also only around 13 minutes away by car from the airport, so you can quickly settle in for a nap to soothe that post-travel exhaustion.
The hotel’s crowning jewel, in my opinion, is its restaurant, Yellow Sapphire. Not only does it have an excellent à la carte menu, but it also serves an exquisite buffet every Sunday for lunch. If you really want to try the chef’s best, however, drop by on special occasions such as Christmas or New Year’s Eve. Try the chicken tandoori here or, for something sweet, the melt-in-the-mouth soufflé.
This hotel is also close to many shopping outlets, such as GEL Church Complex, my preferred spot for everything from ice cream to shoe shopping.

2. Radisson Blu Hotel Ranchi (from USD 66)
This lovely hotel, located 11 minutes by car from the airport, has one of the most beautiful interiors I’ve ever seen. Keep your camera handy to capture the delicate metal boat in the shared lounge area and the fascinating wooden installations scattered throughout. What’s more, all my loved ones who have stayed here have raved about the comfortable rooms.
If you need to take a breather, I would suggest hanging out by the outdoor pool. The hotel also has multiple dining options for when you’re hungry, but I would recommend visiting The Great Kebab Factory for a taste of delicious barbequed items.

3. Chanakya Bnr Hotel (from USD 72)
Only 15 minutes from the airport by car, Chanakya Bnr Hotel has long been a favored spot for events in my family. Not only is the venue gorgeous, but the hotel also provides catering facilities for events to make your planning seamless. For a cozy setting with loved ones, I prefer The Oriental Kitchen. I’m especially partial to the many varieties of dumplings here!
I also highly recommend a stroll around the grounds whenever you have time to see the well-maintained garden.

4. Capitol Residency (from USD 60)
I have many fond memories of anniversaries and birthdays being celebrated at Capitol Residency. As a child, I was awed by the modern, stylish structure, and it never fails to impress to this day. Definitely wander outside during your stay here to get some Instagram-worthy shots of the lit-up structure at night!
Not only is this hotel conveniently close to the airport, being only a 13-minute drive away, but it is also right by Ranchi Junction Railway Station, so you can also easily hop on a train to explore nearby cities, such as Jamshedpur and Kolkata, if you wish.

5. Hotel Green Acres

Set less than 10 minutes from the airport, Hotel Green Acres where I go for delicious dosas. Although the menu at its restaurant, Navratna, only has vegetarian items, the vast variety of delicacies here makes the trip more than worth it. My favorite thing about this hotel, however, has to be its gorgeous view of the runway. You can watch planes take off and land as you savor your meals.
Do also keep an eye out for occasions such as Pongal, when the hotel goes all out to organize great food and festivities.
