Think of Nepal, and you immediately think of gigantic, monstrous Everest. The name alone has the ability to make people shake in their boots. Everest is a testament to a climber’s willpower and physical endurance. It is the magnum opus of Nepal’s tourism lure.

However, look close enough and you’ll see that the altitude in Nepal has also opened it to many other extreme sports adventures that aren’t for the faint-hearted. Adrenaline junkies will want to make these diversions a pre or post trek activity. You might as well signed up for some of these adventures since you’re already in the land of heights. Here are a few more options for when you want to get your heart pumping and your adrenaline running, in Nepal:

1. Go high and low with Everest Skydiving

With four out of the eight highest peaks in the world found in Nepal, it’s impossible to think that the Nepalese wouldn’t utilize for other forms of adventure - including in the sky. You’ll find plenty of skydiving options in Nepal, one of which happens to be the highest skydiving adventure in the world, called Everest Skydive. It has even been mentioned by CNN as number 8 out of the 50 Best Adventure activities in the world, with the caption “Try Before You Die.”

The adventurer jumps from a height of 23,000 feet (7,010 meters) in an AS350 B3 helicopter, down to Syangboche Airport at 12,340 ft (3,761 meters) or to Amadablam Basecamp at 15,000 ft (4,572 meters). What do you see as you freefall? In your peripheral view is the world’s highest peak, Mt. Everest, along with other snowcapped peaks that surround it. You’ll also be able to see some of the Sherpa settlements. There have been over 400 jumps since 2008, more than three-quarters of which have been solo jumps. Following the success of Everest Skydive, other areas in Nepal have also followed suit and are offering solo and tandem skydives, including Pokhara and Kala Patthar.

Paragliding is a fairly new sport to Nepal. It was introduced in Pokhara, back in 2007, as a seasonal offering from September to February and October to December when the visibility is best. The route starts from Sarangkot, 5,223 feet (1592 meters) up in the air, and then lands near Lake Fewa, Pokhara. What you see while gliding to the ground are different temples, monasteries, and lakes around the Pokhara area. You’ll also see partly the Himalayas which include the Annapurna Mountain Range and the Dhaulagiri Ranges. The whole thing lasts about 30 to 45 minutes. But preparation is always key and there are two days of orientation. Otherwise, if you cannot commit to two days of instruction, tandem flights are also available. In order to attract tourists and locals alike to this new sport, they’ve made the jumps affordable at only 60-70 USD.

By most standards, zip flying isn’t that extreme. Other countries offer it, as well. But this particular place in Pokhara is worth mentioning because it’s considered the world’s most extreme zipline. The launch pad is found in Sarangkot village in Pokhara and ends up in Hemja, a refugee camp for Tibetans. The whole line runs abut 1.8 kilometers (1.1 miles) with a vertical height of 2,000 feet (610 meters).

With this setup, you reach speeds of 120 km (75 miles) per hour. This is considered the tallest, steepest, and fastest zip line in the whole world. After you ride, you can check out Hemja which has a Nepalese - Tibetan cuisine restaurant, or go through its souvenir shop.

6. Conquering the rapids with Whitewater Kayaking (from USD 57.0)

Nepal is home to some of the most challenging rapids, and therefore, it is also one of the best sites for kayaking. While kayaking is usually considered an individual undertaking, Nepal has its own kayaking school that will make learning the basics of the activity more cumulative. Whatever level you are, beginner or ready to conquer the more difficult rapids, Nepal has a river that’s right for you.

The Tamur River or the Tamba Khola drains into eastern Nepal from Kanchenjunga. It is relatively tame and perfect for beginners. For those who want moderate to challenging rapids, there’s the more technical and steep Modi Khola which has rapids that drop down as far as 8 meters (26 feet). The most difficult are the powerful Marsyandgi and the upper Bhoti Kosi and Tamba Khosi, which are known to humble even the most technically-proficient paddlers.
