Sunrise Mall: Mojokerto's First Modern Mall With World-Class Amenities

Good news for international visitors

Mojokerto is a small city in Indonesia’s East Java Province and it is in very close proximity to historical sites such as the famous Trowulan archaeological site (10 kilometers, or 6.38 miles to the west), which displays remnants and artifacts of the ancient Buddhist kingdom called Majapahit, and Mount Penanggungan, a mountain with more than 80 candis (Hindu stone structures) scattered everywhere on the mountain slopes.

Many international visitors to these 2 sanctuaries have come to Mojokerto to find an accommodation for the night, and returning visitors will be delighted as now they can enjoy 21st century amenities like a 3-D cinema, gaming centers, top notch cafes, and restaurants inside the mall, where just 2 years ago, these kinds of amenities were only available in nearest city, Surabaya, which is about 50 km (31.12 miles) away from Mojokerto. It is certainly good news for international tourists visiting these attractions, as now Mojokerto isn’t just a place to stay for the night.

Shoe shops, clothing stores, barber shop, and more

Do you need to buy a new t-shirt or sunglasses, or do you need to go to a barber? Did you suddenly break your glasses while you are here? No sweat! Everything you need is available in this mall.

A large selection of shoes and apparel are available in the shoe and clothing stores, located on the ground and first floors of the mall. For the largest selection of clothing, go to Matahari Department Store. It has many kinds of apparel displayed in this large two-storey shop.

There are 2 optic shops selling varieties of eyeglasses, but go to Grand Optical on the first floor for a quick order of glasses, as they can make you a new pair of spectacles in less than 3 hours for less than 300,000 IDR / 22.02 USD. For a haircut (boys and men only) go to the barbershop named ManZone, located on the second floor.

Having a cup of coffee or a bottle of beer?

There have been many local coffee shops opened in the past 5 years, but who would have expected to find a Starbucks-like coffee shop in town? I am talking about Excelso, which is located on the mall’s ground floor, right next to the entrance. Excelso is one of the most top notch coffee shops in the country, which has more than 100 branches nationwide, and surely you can find any kind of coffee drink. Be it Frappio Matcha Pearl (iced coffee blended with matcha) or Caramel Cappuccino, one tall cup of it wouldn’t be enough!

There are a few other coffee shops in the mall. Go to J.CO for fluffy donuts with strong dark chocolate flavors (Choco Loco was my favorite). For a cafe selling beer, go to the second floor and find Kafé 27. It’s good if you bring some friends along with you to Kafé 27, as they sell 5 bottles of Bintang beer (a famous brand of Indonesian beer, which tastes like Heineken) for only 120,000 IDR (8.83 USD).

There are smoking and non-smoking areas in these coffee shops, and if you are a smoker, why not try one of the Indonesian brands of cigarettes, which have sweet filter buds (go for Sampoerna Milk for an Indonesian low-nicotine cigarette).

Food paradise

This mall is truly a food paradise. This is the very first time the city has offered a large concentration of eateries, selling local and international foods.

There are many good restaurants selling great food, such as Hanashobu, selling assorted ramen (their Ramen Rider is delicious, as they put soy milk in the broth) and Pappa Steamboat, where you can choose assorted meatballs and cook them on a mini stove on the table.

Nevertheless my favorite place is Food Street, located on the 2nd floor of the mall. It’s a large food court with more than 20 different eateries to choose from, selling Indonesian and international food. Where else in the city can you have local foods such as empek empek (deep fried fish cake), rawon (beef with dark herbal soup), and bakso (meatball), and international foods like assorted Japanese sushi, sashimi, and a bento set, Chinese kung pao chicken, or Middle Eastern kebabs at the same table? For Japanese food, go to Osaka, as their cucumber salad that comes with their artsy sushi rolls is delicious.

Enjoy a 3D movie at CGV cinema

There is more good news for you! This mall has CGV, a quality 3D cinema with updated international movies (it’s one of the world’s cinema chain that has many branches in Asia and North America, so you might be familiar with CGV!)

This cinema has 3D glasses, where behind the glasses it will feel like watching a real live show. You will see a special effects as if something jumped out of the screen.

You can see what is on the cinema for the day from your smartphone. So make your online booking now and get the 3D experience (now you can see the popular superhero movie Thor Ragnarok from behind the cool glasses!), while enjoying popcorn and soft drinks you can buy at the location!

A kid-friendly mall

Bringing kids to this town and don’t know where they can have fun? Well, bringing them to this mall is a great idea. More than just having a meal or going to the cinema for a movie, they can also play games in one of the mall’s game centers, such as Game Fantasia on the first floor, or Amazon on the second floor. There are video games to play in both places. Playing a car racing game and dancing in a dancing game machine are some of the fun, but I guess your kids won’t want to miss playing one of the jackpot machines, where coupons come out of the machine to be traded for toys or stationery!

If you bring toddlers and you’d rather they play away from video screens, you can go to the kinetic sand house on the first floor. In here they can build something out of the colorful play sand (the sand feels like wet sand found on the beach, but colorful). There are moulds of many shapes where children can put the sand in to make a castle, a dog, etc.
