Tunjungan, located in the city of Surabaya, is a popular place for both tourists and locals to visit. Tourists love visiting the area because the Colonial-inspired buildings preserve Surabaya’s history as the “City of Heroes.” Most aesthetic cafes are also open late at night, contributing to the area’s vibrant atmosphere. Additionally, the number of tourists in this area exceeds that of other parts of Surabaya, making it the liveliest and most tourist-friendly area in the city.
Located in the heart of Surabaya, the Tunjungan area is home to a variety of hotels. It is also home to the historic Tunjungan Plaza shopping mall, which was established in 1986, the renowned 5-star Hotel Majapahit with its Indigo Restaurant, and the lively Tunjungan Romansa street music performances that take place at night.
This central area of Surabaya also offers a blend of modern and vintage culinary delights, especially in the recently revitalized Pasar Tunjungan’s Depot Juang 45, Drama Roastery, and other establishments. If you’re here for the food, read on to discover the yummiest places to eat in and around Tunjungan, Surabaya!

Tunjungan Plaza
Tunjungan Plaza (abbreviated as TP) has been one of the most well-known and iconic shopping malls in the heart of Surabaya since its establishment in 1986. To this day, there are six sections of TP referred to as TP 1 to 6 by management and locals.
No wonder it offers a wide range of dining options. From contemporary and affordable fried foods to DIY cooking experiences, you can find it all here.
1. Wang Kee and Verina Risoles
It’s easy to find fried food outlets in Surabaya, and Tunjungan Plaza is no exception. Here, you’ll find Wang Kee and Verina Risoles. I’ve known Wang Kee since I was in high school. Even now, their chicken puff pastries, kompyang bread, and fried fish cakes are the most delicious!
You should also try Verina Risoles’ chicken rissoles. Rissoles are an Indonesian-Dutch dish where a ball or flattened cake of chopped meat is mixed with herbs and spices, coated in breadcrumbs, and then fried. The toppings will melt in your mouth in no time!
2. Tana Toraja and Pasarame Food Court
The ornate batik prints adorning the exterior, the collections of antique goods hanging from the ceilings of the smoking room, and the lamps illuminating the dining areas enhance the exquisite dining experience at Tana Toraja.
Meanwhile, the Pasarame Food Court on the top level of TP 6 offers a variety of carted (gerobak) Indonesian food as its main attraction. Occasionally, they also have authentic Indonesian snacks on display, such as the Balinese milk pie that I purchased, at the cashier’s register.
You have the option to pay directly using each merchant’s QR codes or gather their QR codes and then proceed to the cashier’s register to complete your payment.
3. G Flavors and Hacienda
Tunjungan Plaza offers G Flavors and Hacienda, both of which have longer opening hours than the shopping mall’s operational hours to cater to your taste!
I usually allocate around 200,000-500,000 IDR (12.30-30.74 USD) for one meal here. A meal consists of an appetizer or a main course and a dessert. Sometimes, I opt for hot tea, or, on other occasions, go for the various cocktail selections.
As for must-try dishes, G Flavors’ Truffle Arancini is a personal favorite of mine! But another popular item on their menu is the Creme Brulee French Toast with Balinese Tabanan sugar. On the other hand, Hacienda’s Mexican tacos are a heavenly match with their beer and soju selections!
4. Bakso YES
Do you know you can enjoy the famous meatball dish, also known as bakso, at Tunjungan Plaza? You can find it at Bakso YES, an outlet located slightly behind Fruto Gelato and Kopi Kenangan!
I am always drawn to their incredibly spicy meatball products, like the “Hot Mommy”, which is a meatball that’s topped with super-spicy condiments.
Another dish to recommend is the Bakso Mozzarella with Indomie. It’s a yummy meatball dish topped with melted mozzarella cheese, tomato and spicy sauces, and Indomie instant noodles. A must-try!
5. XO Suki and Shaburi & Kintan Buffet
TP also has dining options where you can cook your own food! XO Suki is a Chinese restaurant that originated in Surabaya and offers steamboat courses that they call “suki”.
Caution: There are many XO restaurants in TP - if you want the DIY cooking experience, make sure to visit XO Suki, not other XO restaurants, even though they are part of the same company!
Shaburi & Kintan Buffet can also be a good alternative, especially if you prefer grilling meats. Just make sure to finish your meals within the allotted time! You can add extra time, or you will have to pay for any wasted food.
Pasar Tunjungan
Once you cross the pedestrian line in front of Hotel Majapahit’s Tunjungan bus stop (Halte Tunjungan), walk west until you see a sign that says Pasar Tunjungan.
When Indonesians hear the word “pasar”, they usually think of wet markets. However, that doesn’t apply to Pasar Tunjungan, where you can find the best Surabaya culinary products and modern cafes.
Are you in the mood for Surabaya-style kaya toasts and kopitiam? Or perhaps you’d like to enjoy some quality time with your loved ones over a large-sized hamburger? Keep reading for the best dining options here.
6. fisixty.id and Tre Kopi
Are you craving a delicious coffee mocktail? Check out fisixty.id, where you can find a zero-alcohol Irish Coffee mocktail. Interestingly, this is the first time I’ve heard of a non-alcoholic Irish coffee!
Alternatively, if you’re in need of a warm beverage to boost your productivity, Tre Kopi offers a wide range of hot coffees for you to choose from! Don’t forget to try their tasty pastry products as well.
7. Burgbol Burger
Young couples love going to Burgbol Burger for a date. You can spot many of them on the weekends. But that doesn’t mean this burger stall is only for couples.
When I heard all the hype, I realized it’s because Burgbol Burger’s portions are larger compared to other street burger vendors! Let’s not forget that the flavors of their proteins and veggies are also quite generous. I’ve even heard people raving about their onion rings!
Considering all these advantages, budgeting around 50,000 IDR (3.08 USD) if you go alone, just like me, or 100,000 IDR (6.15 USD) for a couple, won’t hurt!

Address: Jl. Tunjungan No.86, Genteng, Kec. Genteng, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60275
Opening hours: 10am - 9.30pm (daily)
8. Tun Kaya
Kaya, a traditional spread, is the star of this breakfast toast (which I affectionately call “breakfast toast”). It has gained popularity in Southeast Asia, particularly at Pasar Tunjungan’s Tun Kaya, where you can even get a takeaway kaya toast.
My personal favorite is the original (OG) version, as it showcases the flavorful kaya spread wonderfully. Occasionally, I also enjoy trying their buttercream variant, which reminds me of roti sisir, an authentic Indonesian delicacy, due to its shape and the rich and thick buttercream.
Let’s not overlook the “Tun” in their name: I believe it is another highlight of Tun Kaya, as “Tun” may be an abbreviation of Tunjungan!
Tun Kaya
Address: Jl. Tunjungan No.86-88, Genteng, Kec. Genteng, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60275
Opening hours: 10am - 10pm (daily)
9. Depot Juang 45
The red and white parts of Depot Juang 45 remind me of Indonesia’s national flag. The vintage interior designs enhance the cozy atmosphere of this eatery.
I love their scissor-cut curry rice (Nasi Kari Singapura); it’s not only their specialty but also affordable, priced at only 27,000 IDR (1.66 USD) per portion. They also offer Nasi Gila Jakarta for the same price as the scissor-cut curry rice and Nasi Telor Kalimantan for 25,000 IDR (1.54 USD). Everything here is made in the Surabaya style!
Depot Juang 45
Address: Ps. Tunjungan, Jl. Embong Malang, Genteng, Kec. Genteng, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60275
Opening hours: 11am - 9pm (daily)
10. KUP Ramen and Dimsum 515
KUP Ramen doesn’t just sell ramen broth and dry ramen products. Recently, their rice products with the same toppings as their ramen have become good alternatives, especially for satisfying dinner cravings.
The best time to enjoy halal dim sum products at Dimsum 515 is during the tea time hour, which I believe is between 1pm and 3pm. Dining in is recommended here, as their products only last a couple of hours outside the fridge for takeaways.
11. Steak Pasar Tunjungan
If you ordered steaks at Steak Pasar Tunjungan, the waiters would ask which sauce you prefer with your steak. Don’t worry; none of the sauces are spicy. So, it’s a great dining spot for people with digestive issues like me!
The last time I visited, I opted for the Grilled Chicken Steak, even though I was also eager to try their more affordable Mie Hotplate, which comes with extra fillings and toppings. They also offer a succulent premium tenderloin steak that you mustn’t miss out on!
Steak Pasar Tunjungan
Address: Ps. Tunjungan, Jl. Tunjungan No.88 stand no 7, Genteng, Kec. Genteng, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60271
Opening hours: Sat - Sun: 1pm - 10pm; Tue - Fri: 12pm - 9pm (closed on Mon)
12. Drama Roastery
In terms of my experience with coffee shops in the Surabaya area, I have never come across any milk-based mocktail products that are vegan-friendly. Fortunately, Drama Roastery at Pasar Tunjungan satisfies my desire for plant-based options by offering the choice to substitute oat milk in their mocktail products.
In addition to their mocktails, you can also opt for oat milk in their signature beverage, the Melbourne Magic, or other coffee variations such as cappuccino or latte.
Before leaving Surabaya, make sure to check out their merchandise items, including tumblers and t-shirts, which are definitely worth purchasing!
Drama Coffee Roastery
Address: Pasar Tunjungan lantai 1 unit 8, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 58252
Opening hours: Thu: 10.30am - 10pm; Mon - Wed: 10am - 10pm; Fri - Sun: 10am - 10pm
Tunjungan Street
If you see a massive “Mlaku-Mlaku Nang Tunjungan”, that’s a sign that you have arrived at Tunjungan Street! Fun fact: Tunjungan bus stop is not the only bus stop you can reach on this iconic Surabaya street. You can also get off at the Siola or Embong Malang bus stop.
Since this is Surabaya’s version of Malioboro, it is not surprising to find eateries that stay open until late at night! Hotel Majapahit and Varna Culture Hotel Soerabaia’s restaurants are not the only ones; check out this listing to discover more!
13. HOHO Coffee
True to their initial impressions, HOHO Coffee excels in offering modern and youth-oriented economical food and beverage menus. For example, you can indulge in their FLOTHO (Float HOHO) series for just 30,000 IDR (1.85 USD). Additionally, their Hotabak mini spring rolls, priced at 20,000 IDR (1.23 USD), provide a delightful and enjoyable dining experience with friends and family!
P.S.: As mentioned on their Instagram account, “HOHO” stands for “Home away from Home.” Just imagine the excitement of visiting HOHO Coffee on the iconic Tunjungan Street!
HOHO Coffee
Address: 001, Jl. Tunjungan No.72, RW.03, Genteng, Surabaya, East Java 60275
Opening hours: 8am - 12am (daily)
14. Aroma Makassar
After learning about some Makassar foods, such as Indonesian rice dumplings (Buras), beef ribs soup (Sop Konro), and an array of exceptional seafood dishes that are unmatched anywhere else in the world (and trust me, I’m not exaggerating - their seafood dishes are truly that delicious!), I immediately made my way to Aroma Makassar.
Unfortunately, by the time I arrived, the only seafood product left at Aroma Makassar was their Otak-Otak, also known as fish cake. Nevertheless, I decided to order it for takeaway. The sauces wonderfully complemented the tender fish cake, creating a delightful blend of flavors.
Aroma Makassar - Tunjungan
Address: Jl. Tunjungan No.57A, Genteng, Kec. Genteng, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60257
Opening hours: 10am - 10pm (daily)
15. Seoul Bunsik
Not many Korean food restaurants in Surabaya provide Hangul letters written in traditional ways. However, Seoul Bunsik on Tunjungan Street has it on its banner. The minimalistic indoor decorations, including the solid orange-colored walls and door, enhance the Korean vibes even more.
I love eating gimbap whenever I stop by Seoul Bunsik! The original gimbap is my favorite because it is quite affordable. Imagine paying 32,000 IDR (1.96 USD), and you get eight, and sometimes even nine, pieces of gimbap.
Some other dishes have unique rules. For instance, tteokbokki is always spicy, and there are different levels of spiciness on the menu. Another noticeable rule applies to Bingsoo, which is only available for dine-in.
Seoul Bunsik
Address: Jl. Tunjungan No.64, Genteng, Kec. Genteng, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60275
Opening hours: 11am - 10pm (daily)
16. Gelateria
As the name implies, Gelateria’s main product is scooped gelato. Everything about gelato is showcased in this vintage-looking stall! I opted for a cup of gelato as I was afraid that the gelato would drip and stain my clothes if I chose a cone. However, since they can place a cone on top of the gelato, I couldn’t resist trying it! Even the mocktails feature gelato and unique toppings such as Pocky!
If you are a gelato enthusiast who enjoys indulging in gelato late into the night, Gelateria is the perfect choice to satisfy your cravings!
Gelateria
Address: Jl. Tunjungan No.70, Genteng, Kec. Genteng, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60275
Opening hours: 9am - 11pm (daily)
17. Piring Seng Coffee & Co
I used to think that boho-inspired decor was only for hotels and accommodations until I visited Piring Seng on Tunjungan Street.
The presence of an old bicycle replica in this restaurant not only adds to the vintage elements but also enhances the boho vibes in combination with other Instagram-worthy decorations. The quotes hanging on the walls are my favorites, and I thoroughly enjoy both the heavy and light meals at Piring Seng!
Speaking of heavy meals, I absolutely love their Nasi Goreng Tunjungan (Tunjungan Fried Rice). As for the lighter options, I adore their Singkong Goreng (fried cassava) and Donat (doughnuts with powdered sugar as toppings).
18. Ngastina
Not many restaurants in Surabaya focus on selling traditional Central Javanese meals. Ngastina is currently the only restaurant that sells Central Javanese meals.
They seem to have a focus on Yogyakarta, perhaps because Tunjungan Street is renowned as Surabaya’s version of Malioboro. Just take a look at their baceman (simmered tempeh, tofu, and other side dishes), Nasi Langgi, Teh Wasgitel, and others.
However, this doesn’t mean that dishes from other areas of Central Java are not offered. We can also find Pati’s Nasi Gandul, Kudus’ Soto soup dish, and others here. Additionally, all the dishes are prepared in Surabaya’s style of cooking, and we can see how they serve the sambal.
Ngastina
Address: Jl. Tunjungan No.86, Genteng, Kec. Genteng, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60275
Opening hours: Fri - Sat: 7am - 11pm; Sun - Thur: 7am - 10pm
19. Indigo Restaurant
Those who stay at Hotel Majapahit will be familiar with Indigo Restaurant, as it is where guests have breakfast. However, this doesn’t mean that the restaurant is only open to hotel guests. Indigo Restaurant’s specialty is rawon, a traditional Indonesian black soup. However, when I arrived here at 9pm, I was craving pizza.
That’s why I decided to order a take-away pizza from here and was pleasantly surprised by how delicious the sausage beef topping was! It’s worth noting that the restaurant prepares their pizzas using traditional methods and cooking utensils. If you’re anything like me, be prepared to wait for about 20-30 minutes until your pizza is ready to be served.
Indigo Restaurant
Address: Jl. Tunjungan No.65, Genteng, Kec. Genteng, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60275

Opening hours: 6am - 11pm (daily)
20. Moji Resto
The more affordable Varna Culture Hotel Soerabaia is just a two-minute walk from Hotel Majapahit. It features Moji Resto, one of the hotel’s budget-friendly restaurants.
If you’ve always believed that hotel food and beverages would be too expensive, it’s time to discard that notion! Budgeting around 20,000-35,000 IDR (1.54-2.16 USD) per portion for yourself alone is sufficient.
The outdoor area also offers a variety of roti bakar (toast), dim sum, and instant noodle options. While some people choose to dine inside the hotel, I would recommend dining in the outdoor area. After all, this is where you can experience the liveliness of Tunjungan Street!
Moji by Varna Culture Hotel
Address: Jl. Tunjungan No.51, Genteng, Kec. Genteng, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60275
Website: Moji by Varna Culture Hotel
Opening hours: 8am - 10pm (daily)
