15 Vegan And Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants In Surabaya

Surabaya may be the second-largest city in Indonesia, but unlike Jakarta, the former capital, I find it challenging to locate vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Surabaya. The North Surabaya region, with its Depot Sehat near a Buddhist temple, is my saving grace and the most vegan-friendly area in Surabaya. That’s why many of my recommendations are located there.

However, North Surabaya isn’t the only place to go, as other parts of the city also have excellent options. This includes Depot Vegetarian Surabaya in Central Surabaya, which is only a 600-m (1,968.50-ft) walk from the iconic Hotel Majapahit, and NUDE Bakery & Cafe x Frutamix or Lemoon Vegetarian in West Surabaya.

If you’re curious, keep reading as I’ve listed more vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Surabaya, below!

1. Depot Vegetarian Sehat

There’s a Buddhist temple called Vihara Mahavira Graha, located in North Surabaya’s Chinatown, which is conveniently connected to several 1980s-style restaurants. One of these restaurants is Depot Vegetarian Sehat, which I noticed while crossing the street from the temple.

The table and seating arrangements, along with the combination of Monotype Corsiva and Times New Roman font in the menu book, evoke memories of my childhood and teenage years.

I highly recommend trying any of their rice dishes, which come with mock proteins and vegetable options. These rice dishes are served much faster than other items on their menu, and the prices are also reasonable. Alternatively, you can explore their selection of vegan-only staple ingredients and ready-to-eat foods.

Depot Vegetarian Sehat

Address: Jl. Ps. Besar Wetan No.3, Alun-alun Contong, Kec. Bubutan, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60174

Opening hours: 7am - 4pm (daily)

2. Verte Cafe

I first discovered Verte Cafe when they unveiled their signature vegan dishes at the annual vegan festival organized by the Indonesian Vegan Society (IVS) in Grand City Surabaya in 2024. Their modern dishes, which include vibrantly colored noodles and sandwiches, have delighted my taste buds ever since.

To get to Verte Cafe, I simply walk 800 meters (2,624.67 feet) from Surabaya Zoo. I find that the cafe’s close proximity to the zoo, their logo featuring a green leaf, the presence of bonsai trees in the outdoor area, and their “#nomeatnoworries” slogan on their Instagram account all contribute to the cafe’s naturalistic ambiance.

VERTE Café

Address: Jl. Jambi No.47, Darmo, Kec. Wonokromo, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60241

Opening hours: 10am - 10pm (daily)

3. Loving Hut

Have you recently arrived at Surabaya Gubeng train station? Are you interested in dining at a vegan restaurant while exploring the areas near the station? If so, I highly recommend Loving Hut on Jalan Sumbawa. The rice, vegetables, steak, and other menu items may resemble home-cooked meals. However, the real highlight is how they creatively name their dishes using Buddhist terms, such as “Liberation Steak”, “Enlightened Burger”, and “Prajna Tofu.”

Upon visiting this restaurant, you will also be greeted by Supreme Master Television, the only channel that continuously promotes a greener lifestyle and compassion for animals through veganism and vegetarianism. The single-channel setup and the content of the TV program never fail to provide a relaxing atmosphere.

Loving Hut - Sumbawa

Address: Jl. Sumbawa No.37, Gubeng, Kec. Gubeng, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60281

Opening hours: 11am - 9pm (daily)

4. Pagoda (or LN Fortunate Coffee)

The legendary Pasar Atom shopping mall in Surabaya is conveniently connected to several temples, allowing me to easily find vegan-friendly restaurants both inside and around the area, which I absolutely love!

The Pagoda at Pasar Atom Baru stands as the last remaining of its kind in Pasar Atom. Additionally, the Pagoda at Pasar Atom also operates a small stall at Pasar Atom Lama, specializing in ondeh-ondeh as its flagship product. However, my personal favorite at Pagoda is their cassava chips. I also enjoy trying out the various rice dishes at the main restaurant.

LN Fortunate Coffee, located in Undaan Wetan, is just a 2-km (1.24-mi) drive from the lobby of Pasar Atom Mall. It is essentially the same as Pagoda, with the menu still using the “Pagoda” name. The entrance, on the other hand, features an aesthetically pleasing LED sign saying “LN Fortunate Coffee,” along with a giant clock adorned with Chinese calligraphy.

5. SriWijaya Vegetarian

For me, SriWijaya Vegetarian’s uniqueness lies in the fact that the restaurants’ names remain the same in both branches: Karang Asem in East Surabaya and Putat Gede in West Surabaya. Even though both branches offer non-vegan options, I always prefer their plant-based dishes!

By the way, according to the Gojek app, Ploso is the area where SriWijaya Vegetarian is located, and it’s only a 10-minute walk from the Blockbuster Museum Surabaya. This museum, dedicated to DC superheroes and located in Kenjeran, reminds us of Surabaya’s heroic reputation. In the Putat Gede area of West Surabaya, there is direct access to the highways leading to Juanda International Airport.

Their nasi bali, a mixed rice dish with spicy stir-fried tofu and mock meats as the protein, is one of the most delicious and vegan-friendly dishes I’ve ever tried! I also had their vegan ote-ote to go, which is one of Indonesia’s fried foods, and the mock oysters in it tasted wonderful!

6. Depot Vegetarian Surabaya and Vegan Mart

As one of Surabaya’s traditional wet markets, Pasar Genteng is popular among tourists due to its proximity to historical attractions such as Hotel Majapahit, Siola, and the colonial-style buildings surrounding Siola and the Tunjungan bus stops. Within the wet market, there is a shop called Vegan Mart. Vegan Mart only operates for three hours from Monday to Saturday, but it is the sole place where you can find vegan food supplies, including frozen mock meats.

If you walk 300 meters (984.25 ft) down a narrower road named Genteng Durasim, you will discover an unnamed restaurant located within a local’s housing in Genteng Sayangan. On Google Maps, it is listed as “Depot Vegetarian Surabaya.” Their char siew pao is enormous, and the mock char siew is incredibly tasty!

7. Velan Kitchen and Velan Express Vegetarian

Velan has two branches. The Tenggilis branch, located next to Metropolis Apartment, is a full-service restaurant. The Adityawarman branch, situated inside Cafe Prajurit food court just a few steps from the Adityawarman bus stop, follows the “Express” concept. This means it offers a smaller selection and faster service.

Recently, Velan Kitchen’s Tenggilis restaurant has partnered with Noon Tea Bar, a cafe that specializes in serving fresh milk. This collaboration not only enhances the charming LED decorations around the restaurant but also caters to lacto-vegetarian individuals. You can order from Velan Kitchen and enjoy your meal in the seating area provided by Noon.

I have been a fan of the vegan nasi pecel for the past three years. It has a much lighter and less greasy aftertaste compared to similar dishes, leaving me craving more. Moreover, this dish is available at both branches of Velan Kitchen.

8. Cwie Mie Lumer Vegan and Vegetarian

This vegan and vegetarian-friendly eatery near Pakuwon Mall looks like a modest home, which I love. I have to ring the bell first before ordering the meals. The cats’ meowing also amazes me!

As the name suggests, the noodle dishes (cwie mie) are their specialty. Based on my experience, they tend to follow ovo-vegetarianism, as their vegetarian products contain eggs. I can see their dedication to providing the healthiest meals possible through their use of oil and imported ingredients.

If you’re traveling around the West Surabaya area, I would recommend using Grab or Gojek for delivery when ordering from this restaurant!

9. Nature Vegetarian Restaurant

Each year, Pakuwon Group’s Pakuwon City Mall (PCM) hosts festivals and expos for both local and international tourists. If you plan to attend these events, I recommend Nature Vegetarian Restaurant in Surabaya due to its proximity to the venue.

Nature Vegetarian Restaurant has been a prominent and award-winning participant in Surabaya’s annual vegan expos since 2016. Their vegan fried rice not only has generous portions, but the aftertaste is also not overpowering, and the spices they use are flavorful. Additionally, Nature Vegetarian Restaurant is the only vegan and vegetarian-friendly establishment in Surabaya that incorporates ginger oil in their tofu dish.

I suggest that you bring at least one friend along to fully enjoy the delicious meals on offer!

Nature Vegetarian Restaurant Surabaya

Address: Ruko Central Park, Blok AA No.11, Jl. Raya Mulyosari No.121, Kalisari, Kec. Mulyorejo, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60112

Opening hours: Tue - Thur: 10am - 3pm & 5pm - 8pm; Fri - Sun: 10am - 3pm & 5pm - 8pm (closed on Mon)

10. Depot Harmonis

I’ve known Depot Harmonis since it opened a booth in ITC, a traditional-looking shopping mall across the legendary Pasar Atom Mall. Now, Depot Harmonis has opened a separate restaurant. It is still in Kapasan, the region not far away from both shopping malls.

I love the homey ambiance produced by the 80s-styled seating arrangements, the presence of central fans and the absence of aircon, the traditional gigantic oil paintings, and the soy sauces on the table. Their “Penyet” (Indonesian’s mock smashed protein) dishes are a must-try for me. Their hot chili sauces are not overly spicy, and I also love how they process the bay leaves.

Depot Harmonis Vegetarian Murni - Non Hewani

Address: Jl. Kapasan No No.194K, Sidodadi, Kec. Simokerto, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60143

Opening hours: Mon - Sat: 8am - 4pm (closed on Sun)

11. Lemoon Vegetarian

The main reason I recommend Lemoon Vegetarian in West Surabaya is its strategic location. The restaurant is conveniently situated near the enormous Pakuwon Mall and Pasar Modern Puncak Permai, the first modernized and most comprehensive wet market in Surabaya. This wet market is popular among both locals and international tourists.

Their dishes, which are rice and broth-based, have a light and delicate flavor. The dine-in area has a contemporary, naturalistic design and is decorated in soft colors. It reminds me of a cozy and luxurious home, which is a common characteristic of accommodations in the West Surabaya area.

Recently, I had the opportunity to try their Roti Labu (Pumpkin Toast Bread). This bread is incredibly versatile and can be enjoyed with sweet or savory ingredients!

Lemoon Rumah Makan Vegetarian (Lemoon Vegetarian Cuisine)

Address: Jl. Raya Darmo Permai Utara No.66, Pradahkalikendal, Kec. Dukuhpakis, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60226

Opening hours: Tue - Sun: 10am - 10pm (closed on Mon)

12. Loving Life Vegetarian Restaurant

This restaurant is conveniently located near the Bintang Diponggo bus stop, which connects to Ciputra World Surabaya, a 9-hectare (22.24-acre) shopping mall in South Surabaya. The restaurant also offers a spacious ballroom for large events and business meetings, as I recently confirmed myself. These amenities are particularly useful on Saturdays.

The restaurant has “Vegetarian” in the name, although some dishes contain eggs, milk, and honey. However, if you’re a vegan, you can request these animal products to be omitted. As a long-time aspiring vegan, I always make it a point to order from the vegan menu at Loving Life Vegetarian Restaurant! For instance, their dim sum options are 100-percent vegan.

Loving Life Vegetarian Restaurant & Ballroom

Address: Jl. Bintang Diponggo No.872, Pakis, Kec. Sawahan, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60256

Opening hours: Mon - Fri: 9am - 5pm; Sat - Sun: 7am - 8pm

13. Cheerful Vegan Bistro & Bakery

Cheerful Vegan Bistro & Bakery (abbreviated as “Cheerful”) is located inside the Mahavihara (the Grand Temple) and the Education Centre of Maitreya Buddhism.

I didn’t see the “Cheerful” logo when I entered the temple. However, I have visited them several times at vegan festivals and can confirm that “Cheerful Vegan Bistro & Bakery” is their official name on social media. They also go by “Cheerful” whenever they participate in Surabaya’s annual vegan festival.

Their satays and Nasi Kuning (Indonesian yellow rice) are two meals I always crave when they participate in the vegan festival. I also long for their pao buns, which is why it’s on my wish list even though I can’t have their nasi kuning or satays.

Cheerful Vegan Bistro & Bakery also frequently hosts vegan-friendly festivals, such as an all-you-can-eat buffet in the restaurant, and offers low-cost medical check-ups.

CHEERFUL VEGAN Bistro & Bakery

Address: Jl. Dukuh Kupang Utara I No.2, RW.4, Putat Jaya, Kec. Sawahan, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60255

Opening hours: 9am - 4pm (daily)

14. NUDE Bakery & Cafe x frutamix

The vegan roti sobek, also known as “baby sobek,” is a fluffy and bouncy square-shaped bread that is always available at NUDE Bakery & Cafe x frutamix. This brand is located in G-Walk Citraland, which has recently become a popular attraction due to the convenient Wirawiri Suroboyo bus stops for tourists.

I appreciate how NUDE Bakery & Cafe x frutamix prioritizes the health and well-being of their customers. They not only offer new variants of Baby Sobek for vegans and ovo-lacto-vegetarians, but they also provide calorie counts for all their products.

Frutamix is a cold-pressed juice brand that has expanded its reach to nearby modern and elite supermarkets, such as Hokky Graha Famili. I frequently come across their Roti Sobek and juice products at pop-up markets in Surabaya.

NUDE Bakery & Cafe x frutamix at Days CITRALAND

Address: Jl. Taman Gapura Jl. Citraland Surabaya No.7, Lontar, Kec. Sambikerep, Surabaya, Jawa Timur 60219

Opening hours: 7am - 9pm (daily)

15. Gracious Soy Kingdom

I would mention Gracious Soy Kingdom if you are looking for healthy plant-based takeaway menus as oleh-oleh (gift). As the name suggests, their flagship products are soy milk-based.

I recently tried their Luo Han Kuo (Chinese anti-cough medicine) and Chrysanthemum jellies with soy milk pudding as the base for the first time. Despite their “Hot” name, their Hot Soy-Lutions are served warm and often come with tempting price offers.

Today, Gracious Soy Kingdom is present in tourists’ favorite shopping malls such as Pakuwon Mall or Ciputra World Surabaya. I also noticed one of their stores in Dharmahusada’s Pusat Oleh-Oleh (Pusol) Bu Rudy, the most comprehensive gift shop in Surabaya.

Eat healthy in Surabaya's vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurants

While it may be difficult to find exclusively vegan restaurants in Surabaya, there are still plenty of healthy vegetarian options available.

In addition to North Surabaya, there are other areas in Surabaya that offer vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurants. For example, you can try the ginger oil-infused tofu at Nature Vegetarian Restaurant in East Surabaya.

I encourage everyone to prioritize their health by visiting any of these vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Surabaya!
